#KamalaHarris’ closing argument event will be held at the #Ellipse, near the White House, in Washington, DC, the same spot where #Trump held his *Stop the Steal* rally, inciting a crowd of thousands to violently invade the Capitol to try to halt the #certification of Democrat Joe #Biden's victory.

Before he was elected speaker, #MikeJohnson played a key role in the efforts to stop the #certification of the #2020election results, taking the lead in filing a briefing in a lawsuit to stop Joe #Biden’s victory.

On Sunday, Johnson also told Axios that he has a “very close working relationship with *President* #Trump & consider[s] him now a close friend.”

“I know that’s mutual,” Johnson continued. “[Trump] tells me how much confidence he has in my leadership.”

…The #WashingtonPost's investigative team has routinely reported on wrongdoing & allegations of illegality by #Trump …& his associates. The #EditorialBoard, which is operated apart from the newsroom, has repeatedly declared that Trump's actions in office & his rhetoric as a candidate have rendered him #unfit for office.

#WaPo earned a #PulitzerPrize for its examination of what Trump did in Jan 2021 to encourage his supporters to deny the formal #certification of President #Biden's #election.

What I found was that although the Stop the Steal movement of 2020 has evolved into the considerably more sophisticated “#ElectionIntegrity” movement of 2024, its success is still premised on persuading #election administrators of 2 things that are NOT TRUE: that widespread #ElectionFraud is a real & present threat to #democracy & that they have not only the #authority but also the #legal #duty to do something about it—that they must “do their duty” & deny #certification.

The Washoe County case, w/an ofcl voting essentially to block her own #election, is the most vivid example of an effort that has been unfolding across the country…since the #Jan6 #insurrection. Now, as voters & campaign pros prepare for what promises to be a hard-fought election, a smaller group of #lawyers & longtime #MAGA supporters is preparing the ground for an even harder-fought post-election rematch. And as they did in 2020, they are preparing to battle on the grounds of #certification.

The commissioners’ duty to #certify, though, was entirely “ministerial” — #election #certification was not an endorsement of the process or the outcome, merely another step in passing the results up through the system. They were legally obligated to certify even if they did see problems. They could note clerical errors—the rules vary from state to state—but once they noted them, they still had to pass the results up the line. This was just the basic admin work of running a #democracy.

She won the primary by a comfortable margin against several #election-denying challengers, & her victory was affirmed even after Beadles financed a recount. (Technically the July 9 meeting was for a second #certification, of the recount.)

But now, at the hearing, #RobertBeadles himself presented an analysis of the ballot data that described the election outcome as a “13.4 sigma” event — so unlikely as to be virtually impossible w/o some kind of interference.

A county judge in #Georgia has rejected an argument by allies of #Trump that local election ofcls have the power to refuse to #certify #election results, finding the process to be mandatory & one that must meet critical deadlines.

The ruling cuts at the heart of a key argument from #RightWing activists following the 2020 election, when Trump sought to disrupt the #certification process as part of his bid to subvert the results.

The filing is a key part of the #SpecialCounsel’s attempt to show that #Trump can still face #trial for attempting to overturn Joe #Biden’s electoral victory after the #SCOTUS ruled he was #immune from prosecution for ofcl acts. It asserted that Trump’s efforts to enlist #MikePence to intervene in #Congress’s #certification of the results under a plan by private *attorney* #Giuliani were integral to his campaign for reelection.
