another concrete example of where current LLM based sysstems are at. I'm reading a book by cameron buckner (thanks @UlrikeHahn ) about deep learning being used to model systems that might or might not mirror parts of the brain or underlie human cognition. It mentions in passing a thesis by piccinini and his research in doing "physical computation".

After it gives me a fairly compact overview that is way more than just regurgitating its sources, I asked it to explain some of the terms and models, then to write _python code_ for the model, which I can then validate and at least use as a starting point (I'm not all that invested in further pursuing that sidenote, but if it was for real I would go to a proper coding agent and continue the work).

How incredible is that for learning and cementing my understanding of a text? It turns it not only into a conversation, which IMO significantly improves retention and understanding, but allows me to pull together different parts of my already existing skills to read a text about philosophy, psychology and neuroscience that I frankly struggle with).

Will I go astray and not understand that the LLM is wrong or unnuanced? Obviously, I am not an expert. But it would be foolish to think that this is worse than me just doing a google search and skimming over the thesis and moving on.

If you need therapy, a therapist is legally bound to keep what you say confidential. And if you use ChatGPT for mental health care? “… we haven’t figured that out yet …” CEO Sam Altman recently said on the This Past Weekend with Theo Von podcast. @Techcrunch has the story and link to their conversation covering a broad range of topics:

Twice now, I’ve been reading an insightful article and then they write, “So I asked ChatGPT to analyze…”

And I stop reading the article. It just makes me so mad. AI is not intelligent. It’s garbage and it’s a crutch and it’s a dangerous trend.

Of the four triggers that #ChatGPT says might cause the #AIBubble to collapse more quickly, "a key LLM vendor fails" seems by far the most plausible to me, but I guess we will see.

In terms of the aftermath, I think it is 100% correct about the consolidation. No one will make money on #LLMs until the majority of the competition is gone and the remaining companies have the near-monopoly they need to jack up prices and #enshittify their products.

@Nonya_Bidniss I just used #ChatGPT to convert a scanned pdf of a data table that I only had a hard copy of to an Excel table. A week or so ago, I had it digitize data points from a graph. It is pretty good at deciphering and offering hints to get past computer coding errors.

Also good for high level summaries of issues. But still yes, it requires an expert set of eyes to spot hallucinations.

Am I the only one who has no use of AI? I find everything I need via regular web search. Existential questions that tie to physics aren't easily found online though, and that's where I utilize AI for ideas. But that's only when I get into that mood, once every 3 months. I just don't see the usefulness of AI in my everyday life. I see ppl being addicted to it, and don't understand how.

Then again, I don't use TikTok either.

All major AI companies have leaned heavily into anthropomorphization. I think there are broader downsides to this approach, but I also find it personally annoying. When I’m using an LLM, I don’t want to think of it as a person with feelings and preferences or as a friend. I want to think of it as a tool I can use to accomplish a goal.
