"The name of #Jewish #food #writer Jake Cohen’s new #cookbook, “Dinner Party Animal,” is a particularly apt one: The 31-year-old celebrity #chef — who lives on the #UpperWestSide with his famous pals, comedian Alex Edelman and songwriter Benj Pasek — regularly hosts parties for his well-known friends.

Like his earlier #cookbooks, “#Jew-ish” and “I Could Nosh,” the new title is catchy. But beneath the playful phrase lies Cohen’s conviction in the central role of community —the Jewish community, in particular."

#ScribesAndMakers 2025.07.22 — Show us something you've created. Tell us the story behind it.

There's not much of a story, here. Both my spouse and I have families where preserving fruit in alcohol was a thing (Ukrainian & Italian extraction). In both traditions, what got used was with a neutral spirit, aka vodka. My grandmother used to make her vodka, and reportedly blew up the kitchen sink in a Chicago apartment a long time ago.

These cherries are preserved in bourbon, and newly made so they've about a month to go to be fully enjoyed. I'm creative when it comes to food and food preparation, so a few years ago after making vodka cherries and having left over cherries after running out of the Tito's, I tried a bunch of things like Triple Sec and Old Granddad. The batch I made with Uncle Nearest generated a fandom.

Sadly, I used my reserved Uncle Nearest for this batch. The new bottles just bought, obviously made by a distiller who bought out the original entrepreneurs, cheapened it. It was obvious: dark brown verse light reddish brown, even discounting the address change. Sad.

I think they'll make good cherries next year, though, if not for drinking neat.

I play a lot of #VideoGames, especially #RPGs and post about my progress, usually with pictures or videos.

I enjoy #travel, I've been to 13 different countries so far. I also enjoy meeting people from all around the world.

I do a lot of #crafts especially when the weather is bad. I #knit, #crochet and #CrossStitch

I'm a #chef by profession, I love good #food and great #coffee. I've been working at a student cafe on a uni campus for almost 7 years.

I like #cycling and try to keep some sort of condition with it. We have pretty good cycling routes in my home town. Photo evidence is shared on the occasion.

If you read this far, and share interests, give me a follow 😁

Cherry Season is here! Three bags of perfect firm dark cherries, pitted. One 750ML bottle of Uncle Nearest 1856 Tennessee Whiskey (100 Proof), slightly diluted Sage Honey + sugar + water, and 5½ clean liter mason bottles. Alcohol preserves the fruit so it doesn't need heat treatment; just fill and cover, but don't dilute the alcohol too much. After two to three months marinating, ready to taste. Longer is fine. Makes a fine cherry cordial! Spoon on ice cream.

Vodka, Gin, or other high proof liquor will do. Hemingway would love this!

I’m doing a company training on #saltstack and am curious how others like to structure #configuration_management trainings? Regardless of whether it’s #ansible or #cfengine or #puppet #chef etc. I think there’s got to be some common paths people find easiest to follow.

Do you start with examples of the syntax or with the architecture or do a quick start CLI demo first? How quickly do you dig into writing “hello world” and what directions do you like to explore? What are the hard and the easy parts for you and for the students?
