PBS Great Masterpieces did an episode on the life of Augustin Barrios! Also features Thibaut Garcia as a guest

Really great episode with a lot of interesting information on his background and musical influences from Paraguayan folk music to Bach to romantic composers.

I'm a #guitartech, I've worked under many people, worked for Guitar Center, and had my own shop for a time. I still do it on the side these days & I'm always happy to give advice. I've worked on everything with strings that isn't a classical instrument.

I #DIY a lot because I often find cookie cutter or off the shelf solutions to be lacking. I'm often seen making or modifying some thing to better fit my use cases.

I'll start.

Instruments: handmade 1992 Ramírez SP "Special Professional" prototype (cedar top, 650mm scale), factory-built 1982 Takamine C-128 (spruce top, 660mm scale).

Skill level: Borderline intermediate/advanced (pieces like Torroba's "Sonatina" or Lauro's "Vals Criollo" max out my ability right now, but I'm working on improving).

Quirks: I use a tradiational footstool, and don't look at the fretboard when I play.

Can we kick the #classicalGuitar fediverse into gear?

We already have great meeting places in the English- and French-language DelCamp forums, and I wouldn't want to compete with those, but there must be a many more fellow classical guitarists (from "beginner" to "better-than-I-could-ever-hope-to-be") lurking here in the fedi, waiting for an excuse to connect.

I've just started reading Madeline Bruser's The Art of Practicing (1997). So far, it's great!

I'm doing some of the things in it already, like taking mindfulness pauses (I like to smell the red cedar from my classical-guitar top) and enjoying listening to the music coming out of my instrument instead of obsessing over how I'm producing it, but I think I'll get a lot more good ideas for keeping practice joyful and creative.

Brandon Acker did a run-through of an upcoming recital's repertoire on a YouTube live. Half of it is on #Baroque #Guitar, the other half on #ClassicalGuitar; well-played, some nice repertoire choices, and he also gives a couple brief explanations of the instruments and playing techniques. The main run-through takes 40 minutes, after which he does a short Q&A, which gets a bit random at points. #Music #ClassicalMusic

#20albums : No explanations, no reviews, just album covers with alt text.

Since my range of listening is wide and eclectic, I'm doing two versions of this. One for the fediverse, one for Bluesky. On the fediverse I'll post classical music + jazz + experimental/ambient stuff.

Bsky version: bsky.app/profile/mythopoetica.

Day 4:

Last night was the Austin Classical Guitar season closing performance with David Russel. This photo is of the outside of the ACG performance space, "The Rosette."

I last saw him in 2020, the week before (and the last concert I saw before) we went into full COVID lockdown. I expect last night's concert may be the last I see in Austin, as I'm planning to relocate in the coming months. Turns out David Russel is my harbinger of change.
