The 2022 Korean translation of Locked in Time (by Dr Dean Lomax) commissioned me to colourise my 50 greyscale illustrations. Here's "The Transient Oasis," showing a colony of Seirocrinus crinoids drifting on deadwood.
#Crinoids are so cool.
The photo shows a hand holding a black rock, a little smaller than a baseball glistening with water.
In the center is a wedge-shaped portion of the rock that is a light gray color and smoother in texture. There are horizontal bands across the V-shaped portion of the stem of the crinoid that lived long long ago in a forgotten sea. #crinoids #fossil #fossils

In 2020 I illustrated LOCKED IN TIME, written by Dr Dean Lomax. Here's my "Transient Oasis" painting, depicting animals in and around a colony of crinoids growing on driftwood.
Crinoids are also known as ‘sea lilies’ and are animals related to starfish and sea urchins. In parts of England, the column forming the stem are made of of many small star shaped structures, and when the fossils of these stems are found they are called fairy money.

Today 2a ago my humans met this little #toad during #hedgewatch & found also this piece of #limestone with #fossils. The fossils are stems from #crinoids i.e. small animals also called #sealilies. We love this name

May I offer you some gloriously crinoidal Derbydene Stone? I took this fossil-rich photo in the Natural History Museum, London - it's part of the building rather than one of the exhibits!
In the Mesozoic there existed so-called crinoid barges, which were formed by sea lilies attaching themselves to the bottom of floating tree trunks. Some like Seirocrinus could grow up to 26 metres tall.
