Mx. Luna Corbden
We can't retain hope in the fight for progress if we only look at the state of politics.

Institutional waves are more meaningful. Individual growth even moreso, and these changes spread outward in ripples. THAT is anarchy to me. That is the principle of Mutual Aid applied to influence and cultural momentum.

But it takes time. It took this kid years to make the decision to read this letter to his Seminary (LDS high school religious education). And now this will sink deep into some of the other kids' minds. They will resist it, dismiss this act and dehumanize its actor, but the memory of it will surface over and over and they will ponder its meaning.

It can only change some of them, and it will take years and many other disconfirming events for them to take a similar plunge. But some will, indeed, themselves walk out of the cave. And maybe make a fuss on their exit.

This is activism. Not one hero riding in to save the day, not one prophet standing on the walls of Zarahemla under a rain of arrows, but each individual choosing the right as they learn it, one inch at a time.

https://www.reddit.com/r/exmormon/comments/1kc9uh5/its_finally_over/

#ReligiousTrauma #AbuseCulture #exmo #exmormon #cults #exvie #exvangelical #resist #EternalProgress

quackademic
#CoerciveControl is a useful concept for making visible the abuses of #power that can occur in hierarchical relationships.

We now see them more easily in #families, #cults & other institutions. Perhaps our next step is to see how people raised in relations of hierarchy learn that the only way to be safe is to either become the biggest #bully in the room or to appease that bully.

So many of the people who achieve power in our #political & other institutions appear to operate like this. While bullying behaviour is seen as normal, or even valorised as a characteristic of alpha masculinity, our cultural framing rules (what we’re allowed to say) & feeling rules (what we’re allowed to feel) obscure it from view. The consequences of a bully’s actions are seen as resulting from the personal failings of those who are harmed. Naming this dynamic becomes a dangerous act.

Sound familiar?

What if our culture‘s assumed hierarchy of human value is mistaken? What if this way of making sense of the world harms us more than it protects? What if we are all connected & our wellbeing depends on the wellbeing of others?

When bullies win, everyone loses. I say yay to every way we make this visible.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-04-12/coercive-control-religion-geelong-revival-centre/105146234?utm_source=abc_news_app&utm_medium=content_shared&utm_campaign=abc_news_app&utm_content=other

Mx. Luna Corbden
Essentially that's what my #AbuseCulture model does. It addresses those beliefs, not just within an individual survivor, but for all of us, in how we help abusers with our language, beliefs, preferences, in who we choose to defend, in our moral systems, in our laws and biases.

I've taken what I've learned from my own abuse recovery and therapy of many years, my studies on psychology and trauma, but most importantly, from learning about cults, high-demand groups, coercive persuasion, and religious trauma recovery, and merged those into a unified theory.

There really isn't much difference between domestic abuse and cult membership.

And cult recovery involves deconstructing those beliefs, making yourself aware of them so that you can consciously choose which to keep and which to throw away.

I've been out of Mormonism for 24 years, and I still find beliefs I have not been aware of this whole time. I've been away from my worst abuser for almost a decade, and still find beliefs he instilled in me that I have not yet examined.

The undue influence techniques used by cults are almost identical to those used by abusers and manipulators. These techniques are used at the societal and political levels as well, and can also demonstrate how racism, sexism, etc all work.

I can't tell you specifically which beliefs you have in you, but I can show you the purposes they serve... there will be beliefs about who you can and cannot trust, what you should be afraid of, what punishments await you for misbehaving, and a couple dozen others. Knowing that framework can guide you through discovering your own induced phobias, milieu control, and thought-terminating clichés.

(Brief plug for my book, Recovering Agency, which outlines 31 manipulation techniques in context of Mormonism, but that can be applied elsewhere.)

#ReligiousTrauma #Abuse
#PTSD #CPTSD #cults #MindControl

smitten

I’m hoping for his vindication. I’m hoping for us to see the heart of who he is. I love the fact that he is mysterious, and I believe there is a clever way to show someone’s humanity but still make them mysterious as hell. Just as we’re finding the innies wrestling with their identity, I want there to be some peace for Milchick. In doing research, I watched a lot of documentaries on cults. It is very difficult to walk away, and even those who want to shift find a way to come back. That is so compelling. It’s heartbreaking, too. I really want audiences to learn more about who he is as a human, and also to find his own voice.
It shows, Tillman's portrayal of Milchick has been incredible. The amount he can convey by not sayings things really captures the self-censoring that cults make you learn.

regarding the marching band:
It really felt like Seth asserting his Blackness in a Lumon space.

Absolutely. We have to remember that Milchick put this together. He chose this. He chose the band. He got the refiners together. He got the outfits together. He probably helped orchestrate the formations, the selections. I don’t know how this man did all of this. [Laughs.] I don’t know what schedule this man is on. He is masterful at getting the job done.
Yes! I love this dynamic where Lumon puts ridiculous expectations on Milchick, looks down on him because they are so racist, yet he still outdoes himself. "duly swamped".

regarding his moment in the bathroom at the end:
Milchick’s journey is so heavy and so complicated, I really just leaned into everything this man has dealt with. Not having the space to process, the space to breathe — it all came bubbling up.
#severance #cults #exCult

https://www.vulture.com/article/severance-tramell-tillman-milchick-s2-finale-marching-band-performance-explained.html

Mark Carrigan
A sociological rather than psychological notion of susceptibility to being drawn into cults

Terror, Love and Brainwashing: Attachment in Cults and Totalitarian Systems, by Alexandra Stein loc 2029:

For over half a century, then, scholars of totalism from Arendt to Zimbardo have found that there is no personality profile of a potential recruit to a totalist or extremist group. In 2011, a UK government report confirmed yet again that “researchers concluded there was no ‘vulnerability profile’ to help identify those at risk of becoming radicalized without creating an ‘unmanageable number of false positives.’”54 As these studies show, it is unhelpful to continue looking for a profile of a “typical” terrorist or cult recruit – most of us could become vulnerable given the right conditions, the right group and the right time. A far more fruitful approach is to understand the profile, methods and operating (perhaps we should say “hunting”) grounds of the organizations to which people are recruited, and to be able to distinguish effectively between open and relatively benign organizations from dangerous, totalist organizations that are capable of exerting extreme levels of control over their members.

This fits well with Seymour’s account of disaster nationalism. If the issue is a matter of conditions rather than psychological type, a increase in the production of those conditions and their distribution across the population, leads to a great susceptibility across population to be drawn into (now digitally mediated and distributed) cults. From loc 2002:

Singer, who counseled thousands of former cult members, described a key vulnerability as being in a normal life “blip.”50 That is, some recent, yet developmentally normal, change in life situation such as a recent move to attend university, a divorce or other relationship breakup, perhaps a death in the family, or a change of job or housing. War, natural disasters or social upheavals – such as the breakup of the former Soviet Union, or the current collapsed states of Syria or Somalia – can contribute to weakening family and community ties leading to increased social fragmentation and isolation. Simply living in the contemporary developed world, with fewer neighborhood ties and more dispersed families, means most of us live in increasingly vulnerable social networks.

#AlexandraStein #conspiracyTheory #crisis #cults #disasterNationalism #psychology
