Canary · Stephen Timms attempts to placate disabled organisations on DWP benefit reformIncoming DWP review promises to listen to disabled people - but activists worry this is a surface level commitment to fend off real change

"What do we know about those who have signed up to #YourParty? This is hardly scientific, but the dozen or so friends and family to have done so are (no surprises here) disaffected #Labour voters justifiably angry at the government’s timidity on #Gaza, on tax for the richest versus #welfare #cuts, on making a positive case for #migration..."

Under the #Constitution, that #power is afforded to #Congress. But #Trump & #RussVought have sought to reconfigure the #budget on the *premise* that they have expansive authority to act on their own, a position echoed by some #Republicans in Congress [only when they’re in power].

Last week, Republicans approved a set of #spending #cuts formally sought by the White House, revoking $9B in enacted funding for #PublicBroadcasting & #ForeignAid.

"As the best and the brightest were being fired at the National Weather Service and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration by senseless and draconian ‘DOGE’ cuts earlier this year under Trump, with no reason given except for the need to cut a paltry amount of the government’s budget, experts warned repeatedly that the cuts would have deadly consequences during the storm season. And they have."

"When politicians can’t admit they are losing, they say they are listening. Sometimes, it is even true. Usually, it is too late. The optimal time for Downing Street to have started paying attention to #Labour MPs’ complaints about #disability #benefits #cuts was before the uprising threatened to torpedo a flagship government bill."

DuBose said the #states had shown “irreparable harm,” from the #cuts & were likely to prevail in their claims that the “#HHS’s action was both arbitrary & capricious as well as contrary to #law.”

“The executive branch does not have the authority to order, organize, or implement wholesale changes to the structure & function of the agencies created by #Congress,” DuBose wrote in a 58-page order handed down in US district court of #RhodeIsland.

The #Trump admin’s 2026 budget proposal calls for the defunding of the #bee lab & other federally funded #wildlife #research efforts. Bracing for these #cuts, priorities have shifted for the the lab, which has collected & identified more than 1 million specimens of #pollinators, hundreds of thousands of which are slotted away in its modest walls. Active field work is on pause. No new research projects have begun.

"The row has reignited a longstanding debate over whether the Barnett formula – in use since 1978 – is fit for purpose, and whether it should be reformed or scrapped in favour of a universal needs-based approach."
