Our twins came late in our lives, and they came early in terms of their delivery. There were difficulties at all stages. When they did arrive, the tears shot out of my eyes like an Icelandic waterfall. I cried when the doctor held them up; I cried when I held them in my arms for the first time; I cried all along.

Initially they needed a bit of extra warmth from an incubator, it was all very gentle. I could watch them there and feel the well of love. They were so, so small.

They were given tiny wollen caps to keep their tiny tiny heads warm.

Today when sorting things I found one of these caps. So so small. The girls are 12 now. I called them to show it to them. I was about to make a lighthearted joke, but then the tears came. Big time. Icelandic waterfall.

I could barely speak, but I told them about their first day and how much I cried on that day and how proud I am of them.

We have never seen you cry, they said, and they hugged me.

P.S. We had our children late, and so for us the subtle drag of aging combines with the constant rejuvenating joy of helping two new humans find their way.

It was a blessing that my daughters could see me with my old friends, hear me speak in my mother tongue, see me interact in a way that echoes how I acted and spoke as a young man.

My children know me as someone who always works, who also always makes time for them, and who hardly ever takes time out for himself. Today a friend (also a godmother to the girls) asked me to join her for a chamber music concert, as she had a spare ticket. I said yes, but I felt slightly guilty not to work or else not to do things with my daughters.

Instead, the girls were excited for me. They enjoyed my getting into my formal evening attire, and afterwards they wanted to know how it went. They were happy for me.

They (unlike I) know that I too need my own time.

So glad I went. So proud of my daughters.

We watched #EverythingEverywhereAllAtOnce for the first time last night. What an utterly gorgeous mind-trip of an entertaining movie. I can't pick one thing to describe my reaction to, because I loved EVERYTHING 😄 about it. So...screenshots!

And, as the daughter of a mother as well as the mother of a daughter, I just have to say...the mother-daughter-mother relationship is COMPLICATED.

It's school holidays, but I need to go to the office to meet some students. My daughters want to come with me. Playing games on the train. When I meet my students, they stay in the room, quietly drawing their pictures. On the way back they walk arm in arm, laughing. We sit on a bench in the University gardens and eat the potato salad I made for them last night. Later we have an ice cream by the water.

Did you know that the Brits were once *not* the #colonizers but the colonized?

In 43 AD, the #Romans invaded the island of #Britain.

The local population was forced to take out loans & make deals to stay independent.

One #King thought he had secured #freedom by leaving his estate to his #daughters & Roman emperor Nero.

But the Romans took his lands and raped his #children.

His #wife, #Queen Boudica, went on to kill 80k Romans as revenge.
