I joined a walk audit in my neighbourhood hosted by the local DOT (SDOT) this morning. While many participants expressed strong desires to have sidewalks built, some opposed that ideae because they'd "take away parking." Some of them opposed more housing because "those apartments don't have enough parking and residents will park on-street, taking away 'our' space." I mean, like, wow, so you own a portion of the public road? What gives you more right to on-street parking than new residents?

Yes, I said that out loud. They fell silent, except for one person who murmured "Well you could say that."

“Light-touch #density”: In many suburban communities, you don’t need big changes to zoning regulations to increase #housing, add newcomers, build livelier neighborhoods and lower taxes. So, how CAN you do all this? Allow duplexes everywhere in the city and then … just wait. Could it really be that simple? Well, let’s visit Palisades Park NJ and see. nytimes.com/2024/03/25/opinion

As an #urbanist, I note that my town is one of the largest settlements in #Vermont, larger than the state capital, #Montpelier, so I am not suggesting we make a "big city" out of a hamlet.

We have an #Amtrak station with a direct line to #NYC, that used to also go directly to #Montreal, and hopefully one day will again. Amtrak is currently constructing a new station house and level boarding platform.

We sit directly astride an #Interstate highway. This is where #density and #urbanism belongs.

"Naturally occurring superheavy #elements beyond those listed in the periodic table could potentially explain why #asteroid 33 Polyhymnia is so dense."

Frankly, this is rubbish of such magnitude, that even some of Avi Loeb's fantastic stories pale in comparison.

No, there are no asteroids with such a high #density that previously unknown ultraheavy elements are needed to explain them.

It is just that their masses are difficult to measure and can be wrong.

Applications are open for the #Snow Measurement Field School!

Application Deadline: October 18, 2023

The week begins with field and snow safety, then progresses to simple but critical snow measurements like depth, #density and snow water equivalent. Students are then divided into teams and tasked with making field measurements that simulate what would be required in actual field campaigns with the help of instructors.

When people trade-in their gas cars for EVs, their gas cars are re-sold to other countries and keep on polluting.
(edition.cnn.com/2023/05/21/afr)

Tire pollution (the microplastics and metal pollutants that come off tires as people drive) is 2000x worse than tailpipe emissions, and EVs don't help with this.
(washingtonpost.com/climate-env)

3,000 pound vehicles for personal transportation make these problems inescapable.

The only thing that makes sense is transitioning beyond cars in general.

TwitterDr. Jonathan Foley on XFinally got an EV today. The Hyundai Ioniq 6. It’s costs about $7 to “fill it up” and even without renewable energy, it emits the equivalent CO2 as a car that gets 125 mpg in Minnesota. And it was cheaper (with tax breaks) than almost any other new car I could have bought.
