Weltschmerz à Gogo<p>It's hard to even articulate just how many ways this story is fucked up. For one, every story I've seen so far emphasizes the poor ICE officers while downplaying the (certainly even worse) conditions for the deportees and highlighting their allegedly violent records (while noting in passing that they haven't been given the chance to contest their deportation).</p><p>Perhaps most outrageous is the fact that Homeland Security is blaming the judge who ordered a stop to these deportations. DHS could, presumably, just fly them all back to the US and resume normal hearings. But for them, the fault lies not with a racist administration that just hates non-white people and has no interest in accountability. No, the fault is clearly with the judge who is actually doing what he's supposed to do, which is interpret the law as written and issue decisions on that basis. (This is not an endorsement of any part of that system, just a statement of fact: that is what judges do every day. Whether or not it's morally justifiable is a whole other discussion.) This is the second time that judge has issued a ruling of this kind against the Trump administration, and obviously other judges have done the same, so they can't say they didn't expect him to do this. The fact that these people -- ICE agents and deportees alike -- are stuck in a shipping container in Djibouti is entirely the fault of DHS.</p><p>It's also crazy to me that ICE officials are framing this as a problem of terrible working conditions. At a time when workplace oversight in the US is being severely dismantled, all I can say is cry me a river. In the same way that police unions should not be regarded as part of the labor movement, ICE agents should not be understood as workers in any conventional sense. Immigrants are workers. Deportees are workers. Students are workers. We're all workers because we live under capitalism, and we therefore have no choice but to sell our labor in order to live. ICE agents? Their job is to keep workers from making problems for the people we all work for -- and to do it on a prejudicial basis determined by race, gender, place of origin, language, etc. ICE agents are not workers, they are just a segment of the most violent wing of the managerial class.</p><p>I genuinely hope that the people being deported and stuck in these inhumane conditions are in some way able to free themselves and just go fucking savage on their ICE escorts. It's highly unlikely, but it's really nice to imagine.</p><p>===</p><p>A top Immigration and Customs Enforcement official on Thursday detailed what she said were deplorable and unsafe conditions faced by ICE staff and a group of migrants with criminal records who were transferred to a U.S. military base in the African country of Djibouti after a federal judge blocked officials from deporting them to South Sudan.</p><p>Melissa Harper, the No. 2 official in the ICE division responsible for deportations, revealed in a sworn declaration in federal court in Massachusetts that the detainees are being held in a shipping container repurposed as a conference room inside Camp Lemonnier, a U.S. Navy installation. Eight migrant detainees from Asia, Latin America and South Sudan who had been convicted of serious crimes in the U.S. were flown to the base last month after a judge said they could not be sent to South Sudan without being given a chance to contest their deportation.</p><p><a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/ice-detainees-djibouti-south-sudan/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">cbsnews.com/news/ice-detainees</span><span class="invisible">-djibouti-south-sudan/</span></a></p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/ICE" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ICE</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/DHS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DHS</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Djibouti" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Djibouti</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Houthis" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Houthis</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/deportation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>deportation</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/MelissaHarper" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MelissaHarper</span></a></p>

MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History June 4, 1943: The Zoot Suit riots began in Los Angeles, with white soldiers attacking and stripping mostly Latino, but also some black, Italian and Filipino youth who wearing zoot suits. They did it in response to wartime propaganda vilifying the wearers of zoot suits as unpatriotic hoodlums. There was a government ban on zoot suits and other long, woolen articles of clothing because of war rationing. Additionally, the LA Times had been whipping up racial tensions by publishing propaganda associating Mexican and Hispanic youth with delinquency, particularly in the wake of the Sleepy Lagoon murder. Race riots also occurred that summer in Mobile, Beaumont, Detroit, Chicago, San Diego, Oakland, Philadelphia and New York City.</p><p>During the Great Depression, the U.S. had deported between 500,000 and 2 million Mexicans. Of the 3 million who remained, the largest concentration lived in Los Angeles. Because of discrimination, many were forced into jobs with below-poverty wages. And then, the U.S. military built a naval academy in the Latino community of Chavez Ravine, further exacerbating tensions.</p><p>Zoot suits (baggy pegged pants with a long, flamboyant jacket that reached the knees) became popular in the early 1940s, particularly among young African American men. It was associated with a sense of pride, individuality and rebellion against mainstream culture. The trend quickly made its way into the Hispanic and Filipino subcultures in southern California. During this time, there was also a rise of pachuco culture among Latin youth. Chicano or pachuco jazz had become incredibly popular. Some of the great Pachuco band leaders included Lalo Guerrero, Don Tosti and Don Ramon Martinez. Margarita Engle depicted The Zoot Suit riots in her young adult novel, Jazz Owls (2018), which she wrote in verse.</p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/workingclass" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>workingclass</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LaborHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LaborHistory</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/racism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>racism</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/raceriot" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>raceriot</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Riot" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Riot</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/ZootSuit" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ZootSuit</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/chicano" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>chicano</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/mexican" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mexican</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/losangeles" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>losangeles</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/propaganda" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>propaganda</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/ww2" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ww2</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/WorldWarTwo" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WorldWarTwo</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/immigration" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>immigration</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/deportation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>deportation</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/jazz" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>jazz</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/boogie" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>boogie</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/hisfic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>hisfic</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/fiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fiction</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/novel" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>novel</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/books" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>books</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/author" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>author</span></a> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/bookstadon" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>bookstadon</span></a></span></p>
Miguel Afonso Caetano<p>I would warn anyone looking like a citizen of a Latin-American country not to visit the United States at least for the next four years. </p><p>"The Trump administration knew that the vast majority of the 238 Venezuelan immigrants it sent to a maximum-security prison in El Salvador in mid-March had not been convicted of crimes in the United States before it labeled them as terrorists and deported them, according to U.S. Department of Homeland Security data that has not been previously reported.</p><p>President Donald Trump and his aides have branded the Venezuelans as “rapists,” “savages,” “monsters” and “the worst of the worst.” When multiple news organizations disputed those assertions with reporting that showed many of the deportees did not have criminal records, the administration doubled down. It said that its assessment of the deportees was based on a thorough vetting process that included looking at crimes committed both inside and outside the United States. But the government’s own data, which was obtained by ProPublica, The Texas Tribune and a team of journalists from Venezuela, showed that officials knew that only 32 of the deportees had been convicted of U.S. crimes and that most were nonviolent offenses, such as retail theft or traffic violations.</p><p>The data indicates that the government knew that only six of the immigrants were convicted of violent crimes: four for assault, one for kidnapping and one for a weapons offense. And it shows that officials were aware that more than half, or 130, of the deportees were not labeled as having any criminal convictions or pending charges; they were labeled as only having violated immigration laws."</p><p><a href="https://www.propublica.org/article/trump-el-salvador-deportees-criminal-convictions-cecot-venezuela?utm_campaign=propublica-sprout&amp;utm_content=1748833201&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">propublica.org/article/trump-e</span><span class="invisible">l-salvador-deportees-criminal-convictions-cecot-venezuela?utm_campaign=propublica-sprout&amp;utm_content=1748833201&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/USA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>USA</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Trump" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Trump</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Venezuela" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Venezuela</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/ElSalvador" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ElSalvador</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Immigration" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Immigration</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Deportation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Deportation</span></a></p>
