Sarah Matthews
When we were in Amsterdam at the weekend we visited a fantastic museum,The Verzetsmuseum (Dutch Resistance Museum), located near the Amsterdam zoo (also a wonderful place to spend some time!) and we were so impressed by the accessibility features we came across. It was all accessible using my wheelchair, there were tactile markings for long cane users to follow throughout, lots of braille, interactive exhibits with plenty to touch and even a whole room about how blind people joined the resistance movement by producing braille newspapers by hand, staying up all night to create them and then distributing them throughout their community to keep people up to date.
Our 13 year old son also enjoyed this museum as the audio guide let you easily pick and choose what to listen to, using a handheld device. It was so valuable to hear the experiences of people in a country that was occupied by Nazi Germany during WW2 as most of what we learn at school in the UK is from the British perspective. We realised how important it is to understand the different pressures felt by those in the Netherlands at that time. The exhibition asks you to stop and consider what you might have done if you were faced by such choices. The bravery of those committed to resisting Nazism was clearly highlighted but it also tells the other side of the story, showing how some groups and individuals either went along with what was happening in the hope of surviving the war, or openly collaborated with the Nazis. The exhibition shows the deadly consequences of these positions. The museum is incredibly well thought through and I highly recommend it, especially if, like us, you’re not organised months in advance to get tickets to The Anne Frank House.
