Library Juice AcademySolidarity Memory Work - Library Juice AcademyMemory work is a broad category of practices, including archival science, librarianship, oral history, journalism, community history, and others, that seek to document a place, community, or event. Solidarity memory work is the application of these practices in explicit solidarity with movements and causes. As our society confronts contemporary civil rights struggles, solidarity memory work is quickly solidifying as a central site of documenting, sharing and preserving the stories of those on the front line. In this class, participants will explore the unique position of memory workers within the broader landscape of political organizing work. The biggest of stories came to the small city of #Butler. Here’s how its newspaper met the moment local #journalism matters. Photographer Morgan Phillips, who stood on a riser in the middle of a field with Trump’s audience that Saturday evening, kept on her feet and kept working, #documenting #history. After #SecretService officers hustled the former president into a waiting car, the people around her turned to shout #vitriol at the #journalists. apnews.com/article/butler-penn

I switched from #Microsoft #OneNote to #Joplin (joplinapp.org/) in #homelab I liked OneNote, and it was always there, available through corporate license. I had many years a notebook for day job and another for tinkering. I never bother remembering each config file, tweak, link etc. I just keep copypasting it all into those notebooks.

But because of ever-tightening corporate compliancy reasons OneNote kept demanding passwords and MFA and such on every device it was synchronizing. And about that I didn't like. An effortless #documenting was turning tedious.

I picked up Joplin because it's a decent #notetaking app, and it can sync with multiple providers, including an external folder. And that folder I share between other machines with #SyncThing, keeping all my Joplin instances synchronized.

A #Chinese woman who served 4 years in #prison over her video reports from #Wuhan during the early days of the #pandemic has been released from a #Shanghai prison facility, following more than a week of online speculation about her whereabouts.

Zhang Zhan, 40 years old, was detained & sentenced by a Chinese court in 2020 after #documenting in more than 120 vids how #Covid19 ravaged the city where the #coronavirus was first detected.

Roughly 1,000 #volunteers armed with the #iNaturalist app on their smartphones are #documenting as many #nature species as possible along the #USMexico border in May. Uploading photos to the app helps #identify #plants & #animals & records the coordinates of the location.

The hope is the information could lead to more protections for the region's natural richness, which is overshadowed by news of drug trafficking & migrant smuggling.

How to live within the prompt size constraints of #LLM #chatbots such as #ChatGPT?

When automating practically any real-world task, the amount of contextual knowledge required can be astounding. Meanwhile current ChatGPT has a limitation for tokens in the prompt+output of 4,000 tokens. The quality also goes down sharply long before this limit is reached.

The solution is simple: Decompose and structure the task into independent components which can be handled one by one in a conditional tree.

You take the input to the process, and ask ChatGPT: "Does this relate to topic X. Answer only yes/no."

You capture the answer and depending on that you go deeper into that subtopic, each time in a new, clean session. When you reach a "leaf" in the decision diagram, you ask ChatGPT to produce a conclusion for that one thing only.

You collect the conclusions across many, many sessions, in aggregate applying a huge amount of contextual knowledge to the task over multiple clean sessions, and finally you get the whole result which you can combine from the sub results either with ChatGPT or procedurally.

To do this effectively you need to #document your domain in a hierarchical fashion in small bite-sized, understandable bits. This doesn't only help #AIs, it will also help new #employees.

In the future, this encoded knowledge base will become a core asset of any #business. No better time to start #documenting your #processes, #procedures and #tasks than now!

In #BritishColumbia & want to volunteer as a butterfly counter in your area? Volunteer counters are needed all across BC.

This year, #volunteers will also be tasked with #documenting #NativePlants on which #butterflies feed and lay eggs. This will help the #project gain better #insight into these #interspecies relationships.
