Danny Garside<p>Does anyone use a good <a href="https://social.coop/tags/dropbox" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>dropbox</span></a> alternative for cloud back up? </p><p>I've spent this morning going through <a href="https://openalternative.co/?alternative=dropbox" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">openalternative.co/?alternativ</span><span class="invisible">e=dropbox</span></a> and they're all not great.</p><p>Best options seem to be a paid Nextcloud host (e.g. I should go through the Nextcloud partners, <a href="https://nextcloud.com/partners/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">nextcloud.com/partners/</span><span class="invisible"></span></a> , but they all seem to be aiming at businesses who need file-sharing, collaborative editing, and I just need backup)</p><p>I'm also trying <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mastodon.social/@peergos" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>peergos</span></a></span> but immediately encountered a bug, so I'm not optimistic currently</p>
Florian<p>There's a growing movement on the <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/fedi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fedi</span></a> that wants people to switch away from Big (US-based) Tech and towards <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/FOSS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FOSS</span></a> alternatives like <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/Linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Linux</span></a>, alternatives to <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/google" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>google</span></a>, <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/Microsoft" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Microsoft</span></a>, <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/dropbox" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>dropbox</span></a> etc.<br>For <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/screenReader" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>screenReader</span></a> users, that might not be as simple as all that due to <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/accessibility" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>accessibility</span></a> reasons. This weekend's IC_Null stream aims to dig into this, but I need your help. What tools, services etc. should I look at from an <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/accessibility" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>accessibility</span></a> perspective? Anyone here who needs their tools evaluated? Anyone here who's curious about a particular tool or suite of tools? Let me know and I'll add it to the list. Anything goes. <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/selfHosting" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>selfHosting</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/blind" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>blind</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/tech" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>tech</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/EU" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>EU</span></a></p>
Space Hobo<p>EDIT: Please only respond if you have experience with a service that actually provides group management of a shared file collection. I am not looking for hosted backups, but live file collaboration and sharing.</p><p>Dear <a href="https://teh.entar.net/tags/LazyWeb" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LazyWeb</span></a>, I have a question about online storage services.</p><p>I'm part of a volunteer organisation that has a lot of people of extremely wide and varied technical abilities. A couple decades ago, one of the dearly departed members set up a <a href="https://teh.entar.net/tags/DropBox" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DropBox</span></a> account for the group, and it has served them reasonably well over the years. But right now they're starting to feel like maybe it's a bit long in the tooth, and they aren't sure about paying for more storage if there are better choices.</p><p>Two of us are absolutely GenX Linux nerds, who will mount whatever it is via `rclone` and move on, but some members are in their 30s and some in their 80s and we need something that works for everyone. Bonus if we can use a company that doesn't kill people or forests or oceans to make their service work, although I realise that's often a vain hope these days.</p><p>Does anyone have good suggestions for a resilient file hosting/sharing service in 2025?</p>

Kevin Edward Proulx<p>Just cancelled my <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/Dropbox" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Dropbox</span></a> plan &amp; deleted my account. USA based data storage cannot be trusted anymore under fascist Trump regime. Migrated business to Canadian company, with servers located here in Toronto. <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/ElbowsUp" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ElbowsUp</span></a> 🇨🇦. Sync has my support now.</p><p><a href="https://www.sync.ca" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="">sync.ca</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p>
Peter Christensen<p>Well, folks, I just cancelled <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/Dropbox" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Dropbox</span></a> &amp; signed up for <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/Sync" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Sync</span></a>. Unfortunately (or fortunately), my Dropbox plan only just renewed, so I'll have both for almost a year. I plan to gradually copy stuff over to Sync in the coming months and see how it goes </p><p>The Sync plans are MUCH less expensive, so if you're looking for a Canadian sync and file sharing service, it might be worth checking out.</p><p>Of course (to mis-use an idiom) the proof will be in the pudding.</p>

Peter Christensen<p>Do I have any friends on here using Sync (i.e., sync.com, the Canadian Dropbox alternative) who can tell me about how well it works? In any case, I think I’ll sign up for a free plan and see how it goes. I’d love to get off <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/Dropbox" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Dropbox</span></a>.</p>

Peter Christensen<p>I plan on retiring in a few years, and, I gotta say, one of the things I'm most looking forward to is uninstalling effing <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/MSWord" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MSWord</span></a>, effing <a href="https://mastodon.world/tags/Dropbox" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Dropbox</span></a>, and any number of increasingly enshittified pieces of software on my computer.
