After months of procrastinating on it, I finally clean installed Windows 11 and Debian 12 (Linux) on my personal laptop. I intend to use Debian by default as my daily OS and dual boot to Windows if needed. If you want a clean install of W11, check out Windows Utility (Chris Titus Tech) and its MicroWin functionality. Oh and Ventoy is awesome: a single flash drive with all the .iso installers you need, readily bootable.

I hope to be able to upgrade Memory capacity.
I bought a Samsung N210 a few days ago. I paid €17.98 with shipping. A good deal, I think. Perfectly functional. It just lacks the F11 key (which works anyway) & its power supply/charger.
Ideally, I would like to install a dual boot Windows XP/Linux to dedicate it to #retrogaming.
I will get it this week. :0)

@puppygirlhornypost2 @navi nodds in agreement the entire #CensorBoot-Stack is literally done to maximize pain and frustration, brick #DualBoot / #MultiBoot setups and is by #Microsoft's own admission inherently & unfixably insecure.
- As can be seen by the fact that they literally didn't even bother with "#SecureBoot" on the #XboxOne which remains uncracked to this day...

Przy okazji prac z tym laptopem wyszła niezbyt fortunna zmiana w ostatnim #Ubuntu 24: wyłączono detekcję innych systemów operacyjnych zainstalowanych na komputerze oraz dodawanie ich automagicznie do #grub-a. Konsekwencją tego jest niewyświetlanie grub-a wcale, bo po co, jeśli mamy tylko 1 zainstalowany os - Ubuntu właśnie.
Oczywiście można łatwo to zmienić odpalając terminal, ale dla osób, dla których tworzy się Ubuntu, gdzie terminal jest "schowany", to może być problem i niepotrzebne zamieszanie.
Przez lata działało automatycznie, teraz przestało :/
Jak sobie poradzić?
Edytując plik konfiguracyjny gruba:
sudo nano /etc/default/grub
1 zmiana: wyłączenie ukrycia grub-a przez zakomentowanie # opcji hidden i ustawienie timeout
#GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=hidden
GRUB_TIMEOUT=3
po zapisie pliku pamiętamy o:
sudo update-grub
teraz odpalamy:
sudo os-prober
Po restarcie inne systemy powinny się pojawić w menu grub-a wyświetlanym przez 3 sekundy.
Ta opcja nie włącza automatycznej detekcji, a robi to jednorazowo.

So, here's the issues she ran into in no particular order:
- Heavy tearing in games (resolved by setting "Force Composition Pipeline" in NVIDIA settings)
- Discord screen sharing doesn't support audio on Linux (worked around by using Vesktop)
- Slightly degraded performance in VRChat desktop mode
- Initial confusions about the directory structure
That's about it.
I'm so happy. When I introduced my wife to Linux Mint a couple weeks ago I thought she might take a good look at it and then keep using Windows. Which would've been fine.
But to my surprise, she's actually giving it a fair change to use it daily! I created a little penguin icon on her Windows desktop labelled "Reboot to Linux", using a handy tool called Bootnext¹. This way, she doesn't have to mess with boot managers.
There has been surprinsingly little issues. If you're curios, I will list them briefly in the next post.

Auch wenn #Microsoft aus Eigeninteresse etwas anderes behauptet: Alle gängigen Computer, die jünger als ca. 10 Jahre sind, sind schnell genug als Arbeitstier für alltägliche Aufgaben wie das Surfen im Internet oder Videokonferenzen. Und etwas anderes findet ja auch auf den meisten Bürocomputern nicht statt – neue Software läuft meist (auch) im Webbrowser.
Wenn ein betagter Computer täglich viele Stunden läuft, kann es sinnvoll sein, ihn durch einen stromsparenderen zu ersetzen.
Wenn MS sich weigert, #Windows11 auf einem Computer laufen zu lassen, auf dem #Windows10 läuft, ist das kein Grund, die Hardware zu ersetzen, aber ein guter Grund, zu #Linux zu wechseln.

Bei der @datenfreude überlegen wir, eine #LinuxInstallParty in #Bielefeld zu veranstalten. Also ein Treffen z.B. in den @acmelabs, bei dem Leute ihre Laptops mitbringen können und dann mit unserer Hilfe ein GNU/Linux darauf installieren. Gäbe es daran Interesse?
UPDATE: #Datenfreude heißt inzwischen @Datenpunks, und wir haben uns heute darauf festgelegt, am 7. Dezember in den Räumen der @acmelabs eine LinuxInstallParty zu veranstalten. Wir bereiten bootbare USB-Sticks vor, auf denen verschiedene Linux-Distributionen zum unverbindlichen Ausprobieren bereitstehen. Wenn euch eine gefällt, könnt ihr sie direkt installieren. Falls ihr schon Windows auf eurem Computer habt, kann das draufbleiben (#dualBoot) oder ersetzt werden. Am besten macht ihr in dann vorher ein Backup.

Hallo liebe Bubble hier in der #Fediverse. Aus Gründen suche ich für mich einen neuen Laptop. Und dieses Mal tatsächlich einen für Dualboot mit Windows/Linux, da ich ungefähr alle zwei Monate für genau eine Windowsapplikation dieses Microsoft Dingens benötige. Ja, ja ich weiß und nein, es gibt leider keine Alternative unter Linux und mit Wine habe ich es auch schon erfolglos getestet. 
Also gesucht wird ein Laptop, der folgende Ansprüche erfüllt:
Linux:
- Laufzeit auf mehrere Jahre ausgelegt, da ich meine Laptops so lange wie möglich nutze
- Genutzte Software: Browser, Mail und LibreOffice
- Benutzung einer USB-C Dockingstation von Lenovo für den Betrieb von zwei Monitoren
- Display 14 Zoll (oder größer, je nach Preis)
- Lange Akkulaufzeit
- Kein "Geficke" beim Installieren von div. Linux Distributionen
Windows:
- Billigste Windows-Lizenz, die möglich ist.
Keine Ahnung, worauf man heute bei einem Kauf eines Laptops für Privat achten sollte? Es muss keine Kiste mit dem neuesten Scheiß sein, sollte aber auch keine billigste Hardware sein, die nach drei Jahren nicht mehr zu nutzen ist.
Deswegen brauche ich die Unterstützung der Weltbesten #Fedinauten ever.
Welche Laptops (Hersteller/Modell) sind zu empfehlen?
Welche Onlineshops sind empfehlenswert?

The laptop still works when plugged into a monitor. I could use that as a dedicated studio computer.
I create a Linux partition on the ‘new’ second hand machine and run Asahi.
That gets me back to my original sort of plan of switching from Mac to 100% Linux but with Mac fall back.
I really am my own worst enemy.
Has anyone tried a dual boot with Asahi?

For her job, my wife is asked for a VPN that only works on #Ubuntu 20.04 or higher, or #Debian 9 or higher.
But Ubuntu 32-bit is no longer supported or updated beyond... 18.04. I'm stuck with an obsolete OS.
So I'm thinking of switching the Linux partition to #Mint #MintLMDE, based on Debian 12.
