This Is My Glasgow<p>As the city developed it was covered over and now it primarily runs underground through culverts between here and the point where in enters the Clyde near the tidal weir at Glasgow Green. However, a short section is visible at the surface on the southern side of Duke Street near its junction with John Knox Street.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgow</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/molendinar" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>molendinar</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/molendinarburn" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>molendinarburn</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowhistory</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/riddrie" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>riddrie</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowgreen" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowgreen</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/dukestreet" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>dukestreet</span></a></p>
This Is My Glasgow<p>The Molendinar Burn, Glasgow's third river, disappearing into a culvert near Riddrie Park Cemetery. The original religious settlement from which Glasgow grew, founded by St Mungo in the 6th Century, was built on the banks of the Molendinar, and over time, its waters were to power mills and brew beer. </p><p>Cont./</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgow</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/molendinar" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>molendinar</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/molendinarburn" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>molendinarburn</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowhistory</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/riddrie" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>riddrie</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowgreen" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowgreen</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/dukestreet" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>dukestreet</span></a></p>
This Is My Glasgow<p>This is an interesting-looking wee building on Duke Street in the East End of Glasgow, which has clearly seen better days. There's a ghost sign above one window indicating it was once a tobacconists (thanks to Dennistoun Style for pointing this last bit out).</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgow</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/architecture" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>architecture</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/architecturephotography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>architecturephotography</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/abandonedbuilding" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>abandonedbuilding</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/dennistoun" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>dennistoun</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/dukestreet" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>dukestreet</span></a></p>
This Is My Glasgow<p>Family Department sign on the Ladywell Bar on Duke Street in the East End of Glasgow. Dating from a time when women weren't widely welcome in pubs, the Family Department was where they could buy alcohol for comsumption at home.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgow</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/ghostsign" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ghostsign</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/familydepartment" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>familydepartment</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowghostsign" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowghostsign</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowpubs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowpubs</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowhistory</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/ladywell" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ladywell</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/oldpubs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>oldpubs</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/dukestreet" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>dukestreet</span></a></p>
This Is My Glasgow<p>I love coming across a threshold mosaic in an old Glasgow building. This one is particularly pretty. It's at the entrance to a ground floor shop in the Bell o' the Brae tenements on the corner of Duke Street and High Street.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgow</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/mosaic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mosaic</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/ceramics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ceramics</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/architecture" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>architecture</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/design" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>design</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/tenement" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>tenement</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowtenements" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowtenements</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/dukestreet" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>dukestreet</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/highstreet" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>highstreet</span></a></p>

This Is My Glasgow<p>Heads on the facade of the former Alexander's Public School on Duke Street in Glasgow. Built in 1858, these busts were created by John Crawfrd. They are (top left to bottom right): Homer, Aristotle, an unidentified man, Shakespeare, Michelangelo and Milton. The unidentified man may be James Alexander who owned the neighbouring cotton spinning mill (still standing) and who funded the school's construction.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgow</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/architecture" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>architecture</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowbuildings" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowbuildings</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/oldschool" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>oldschool</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/dukestreet" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>dukestreet</span></a></p>
This Is My Glasgow<p>In 1882, Duke Street became a women's prison when male prisoners were moved to the newly built Barlinnie Prison. It was here that many Scottish suffragettes were imprisoned during their campaign for equal voting rights. When the prison was being demolished, a cast-iron umbrella stand painted in the suffragette colours which was rescued and is now housed in the Glasgow Women's Library in Bridgeton.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgow</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowhistory</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/dukestreet" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>dukestreet</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/dukestreetprison" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>dukestreetprison</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/suffragettes" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>suffragettes</span></a></p>
This Is My Glasgow<p>All that remains of Duke Street Prison on the East End of Glasgow. Originally opened in 1798, it finally closed in 1957 and was demolished shortly afterwards. It was an early example of the Separate System introduced in the early 19th Century which was based around keeping prisoners in solitary confinement.</p><p>Cont./</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgow</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowhistory</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/dukestreet" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>dukestreet</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/dukestreetprison" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>dukestreetprison</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/suffragettes" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>suffragettes</span></a></p>
This Is My Glasgow<p>Looking up Hunter Street from Duke Street in the East End of Glasgow. The corner tenement dates from 1897 and designed by John Cunningham. The one further up the street was built in 1902 and was designed by John Gordon.
