March 2025 in review / Récap de mars 2025

I am now 31 years old, and the proud owner of a gravel bike and of more equipment than my fitness levels justify. Life is good.

I really enjoy reading comments on my favorite podcast episodes in Patreon. Problem is, I don’t listen to my podcasts in Patreon, I use Pocket Casts.

I can’t wait for the day when more creators move to open, federated platforms to host their podcasts, so we can all participate in the discussion in one place, the Fediverse. Are there any popular tools like that? I only know of WordPress right now, and while it works it’s not necessarily known for podcasting. I think Castopod does this maybe?

I’d love to get a list of old school bloggers who are still at it. How would you go about that?

Building a list of old school bloggers

@davew After all these years, I think « webrings » and « blogrolls » is still the right answer to that question. Bloggers manually curating lists of other bloggers still feels like the most trustworthy source of inspiration for me.

Just like jumping from one Wikipedia article to another to learn new things can be fun, jumping from one site to another in a webring can be just as fun I think!

As an alternative, Kagi also recently created a « Small Web » list of active bloggers and content creators. I’ve been pretty happy with it. You can browse it here, and access the full list via RSS or an OPML file here.

Julia: A Retelling of George Orwell’s 1984, by Sandra Newman

Julia Worthing is a mechanic, working in the Fiction Department at the Ministry of Truth. It's 1984, and Britain (now called Airstrip One) has long been absorbed into the larger trans-Atlantic nation of Oceania. Oceania has been at war for as long as anyone can remember, and is ruled by an ultra-totalitarian Party, whose lea

overinformation cleanup

I have been overwhelmed recently, so I followed some of Tracy's practices:

Removed my RSS Reader from my phone's home screen (but not from the app menu, for now)

Unsubscribed from all large news sources and signed up for their weekly newsletter instead (wherever possible, I will receive the newsletter in my RSS Reader). That's L'Équipe, Les Jours, Le Monde and Libération

TIL about CryptPad, a Google Docs alternative. Somehow this is the first time I hear about it! The project seems pretty cool. @Em0nM4stodon wrote an extensive guide about it:

If you have been looking for a privacy-respectful replacement to Google Docs, now is the time to move! 📦

@cryptpad offers a full office suite that is completely end-to-end encrypted and built from the ground up with data minimization in mind.

And it’s free! 🎉

Why stay with Google when there is a much better option literally right there👇

CryptPad Review: Replacing Google Docs

I’m thinking I may give it a try locally, although I will keep an eye on the GitHub repo before I set up an instance for my family. I’m not seeing a ton of activity in the past month, but it could just be temporary. I do see that they have secured some EU funding, they already make money through their hosted instance, they make supporting them easy via OpenCollective, and they’re open about their financial status, so that’s all promising signs in my book!

my religion

My religion, should anyone be interested, can be reduced to a simple question: What is the most generous thing one can do in this case? If that question doesn’t apply, I have another: What would my grandfather think about this? Evil Author Day : mes brouillons abandonnés, my abandoned drafts

Sara a parlé d'Evil Author Day l'an dernier et je me suis gardé l'idée bien au chaud depuis.

Le concept : le 15 février, on balance nos idées et brouillons en public sans la moindre intention de les finir. Si quelqu'un veut reprendre les infos et idées, n'hésitez surtout pas : de mon côté, si c'est

January 2025 in review / Récap de janvier 2025

January 2025 includes a big win, which is that since Zuckerberg's a little shit and US big tech is somehow worse than before, I've managed to onboard three people I care about very much to Signal.

It also comes with less-enthusiastic news about my knee, as in, no news. It's not better. It's not worse. It's just painful. At least, I'm getting
