More observations on #replit:

replit is another step along the road of anybody being able to describe a problem and have #AI develop a solution. Now, for most people, describing the problem clearly and understandably is the real challenge. So even when we arrive at that point, we may not find it as useful generally as we'd hope.

Non-technical folks will still struggle to use replit. It speaks in the language of #software #engineers; it's targeted for use, not by non-#developers, necessarily, but by developers looking for more leverage to get more work done, faster.

In my case, I've got a CS degree, but my #programming years are well behind me. But my experience means I know how to spec out a solution, and how to work with the developer (replit) to debug it. So for me, the leverage a product like this offers is substantial.

Nearly 4,000 #NASA employees have opted to leave space agency through the Trump administration's deferred resignation program, NASA said on Saturday. The cuts amount to an estimated 20% of NASA's workforce, and will reduce the agency from 18,000 to 14,000 employees, NASA spokesperson Cheryl Warner said in a statement shared with NPR. The total number includes the agency's loss of 500 other workers due to normal attrition, she said. npr.org/2025/07/26/nx-s1-54813 #space #science #scientists #engineers

Open science forms the pillar for mankind to invent a better world, and a society worth living in. Or so it should be, if academia weren’t held captive or willing prisoner to commercial interests. Fediverse opens new grazing grounds for #scientists, #engineers, or anyone for that matter, to uncover new #wisdom and #insights collectively.

If only more #OpenScience tools would add #ActivityPub support to join our #fediverse.

But we have @bonfire Open Science app, and @scifed as early adopters.

“Canva co-founder #MelaniePerkins wrote to staff on May 5 to unveil #Canva’s official #AIGuidelines, two months after it axed the majority of its #TechnicalWriters division and directed #engineers to complete the bulk of their #tasks using #AITools.

The COACHES (weaselword for manager) said the company had recently directed them to *formally assess* the way employees, known internally as “Canvanauts”, use AI in their six-monthly PERFORMANCE reviews. They also said the company has #automated the #writing of these #reviews.

A company spokesperson denied these claims in a lengthy statement but said Canva does “ENCOURAGE” employees to “reflect on how they’re using AI in their work” on an informal basis and said they use an internal tool that assesses performance reviews against their internal metrics after a human has written the

(No dissent tolerated)

“We’re incredibly committed to helping our team thrive in this new era of AI. We’re making significant investments in upskilling across the entire company, with a strong focus on learning and experimentation,” the Canva spokesperson said.

“Our #investmentstrategy in this space aren’t about #replacing our TEAM’s #judgement, #creativity, or #craft, but scaling them so we can spend more time on the projects that move us closer to our mission and make a difference for our community,”

(Emphasis note on TEAM, not individuals)

For a consumer facing software company, the last place I’d be removing human input would be where the technology touches customers. The usability, instructions, reliability through Engineering, Art and crafting of a product.

Where do you cut? Accounting, excessive management (top & bottom) and back office. This is the difference between an accounting/MBA and an Engineering / consumer focused company.

No wonder the technical staff are looking at #Unions. JobBot unleashed by the *Boss Class* to replace technical staff. 🦾🤖🦿

From concept to cosmos: Webb #engineers on the #telescope that changed everything
The team behind the #JamesWebbSpaceTelescope (#JWST) just scored the Simon Ramo Medal, given by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (#IEEE) for exceptional achievement in systems engineering and systems science.
The award is well deserved, considering how the JWST – a project with contributors including #NASA, #ESA, and Canadian Space Agency (CSA) – turned out.

#LabPlot, the project for #statisticians, #researchers, #scientists, #engineers, #educators and #students, publishes version 2.12 of its #FREE comprehensive #dataAnalysis and #visualization tool. 🚀

This version adds more plots and #plot sub-types, expands the number of functions for spreadsheets, includes new analysis tools, as well as an experimental software development kit.

The project is partly funded through @NGIZero.

In #NixOS the snow theme was used to illustrate that each flake is a perfect recreation, which didn't aptly describe this glorified build system.

The best analogy (even within the #NixOS community) has been the cooking analogy.

#Nix are the kitchen utensils, #Nixpkgs the recipes, #NixStore the pantry, packages ingredients, profiles are tables and derivations are dishes.

This proves that we need #marketing, because #engineers suck at naming things.

I know I'm getting old, or dare I hope to say, wise, because I can't shake the feeling that any and all demonstrable #productivity gains generated by the use of #AI could be outweighed by simply #teaching people to use and manipulate structured plain text efficiently.

Likewise, teaching new #engineers to do those basic things well instead of jumping straight to "this is how you install the latest framework".

Do I know any #Canada #Canadian #engineers on here?

I'm trying to understand the licensing process to be a professional engineer in BC or Alberta. There's the NPPE which is....a professional practices exam? And there's work experience and such

Is there a knowledge exam like what the USA does in most (all?) states for our PE tests? Like where you do problems on thermo/fluids, AC and DC circuits, materials, etc?

I'm looking at academic positions that require professional engineer registration.

How Elon Musk Executed His Takeover of the Federal Bureaucracy

The operation was driven with a frenetic focus by the billionaire, who channeled his resentment of regulatory oversight into a drastic overhaul of govt agencies.

#Screens "train us in convenience, which is training in predictability, in the facade of certainty. And when that facade inevitably breaks, we often find ourselves at sea.

"In the brilliant and ever-relevant Seeing Like a State, James C. Scott outlines the many ways states fail; principle among them is an obsession with putting things in order, with simplification and efficiency. More often than not, that efficiency translates into brittleness and weakness, into systems so fragile they break the moment something unanticipated arises."

The employees also warned that many of those enlisted by #ElonMusk to help him slash the size of the federal government under #Trump’s admin were political ideologues who did not have the necessary skills or experience for the task ahead of them.

The mass #resignation of #engineers, #DataScientists & #ProductManagers is a temporary setback for #Musk & the Republican president’s tech-driven #purge of the federal workforce.
