No, larger far-right groups in the European Parliament will not disrupt European research policies.

... but look out for denial of scientific evidence (climate and gender) and resistance to programmes like #horizonEU, which are managed from Brussels.

So at the end of the day, if you look past all of the wringing of hands about France's descent into fascism following the European elections, the numbers aren't that scary.
The fascists (ID) gained 9 seats in total, across the whole of Europe.
It's 9 seats too many, sure, but only 9 seats all the same.

@glencoe are the far right really surging overall? I'm seeing some gains but more by centre right parties than far right ones overall.

You may have a better handle on it as I'm going off election summaries. #EUpolitics #EUpol #EP2024

The Guardian · EU elections: populist right makes gains but pro-European centre holdsBy Jennifer Rankin

The actual outcome was very close to the exit poll.

GroenLinks/PvDA ended up with 8 seats, as expected, while second place PVV ended up with 6, one less than predicted by the press. The pro-EU left leaning Volt ended up with two seats, which was more than the prediction.

While some people have tried to make a lot out of a supposed low turnout, more people voted this time than in 2019 (46.2% vs. 41.9%).

The best news is that while 1/4 of the people living in my area voted for a fascist in the national election last year, only 1/7 did so in the European election. That's still too many fascist voters. But it's an improvement.

The right gained seats in Europe, but they have not taken control of the European Parliament. Locally at least they have taken a substantial step backward since last year.

Is it too much to ask if our press perhaps should stop hyping every extreme right party ?

The press doesn't need to report on every single unpleasant word from the extremists. Meanwhile they really should take more notice of green issues which are already damaging us all (see the flooding in Austria, which just voted largely extreme right). The reduction in the green vote share is IMO largely a result of poor press coverage.
