Today was a fandomy day all around! Today Mom and I went to the Fraggle Rock Back to the Rock live show in Tampa. It was a lot of fun! Every time I go to something like that I feel like I'm at an unofficial fan convention, lol. Then when we got home one of my Wandering Inn shirts came! I love it! My mom was kind enough to get them for me. A keychain as well for my backpack. I want to put a different fun fandomy keychain on each compartment. #Fandom #FraggleRockBacktoTheRock #theWanderingInn
I often say I'm "bad at hobbies/fandoms", but that's shorthand for my actual pattern:
It's pretty much a "jack of all trades" kind of thing. Shallow(ish) learning/involvement, but deep enough for me to enjoy things and satisfy my personal preferences for bouncing back and forth between shiny, new things and comforting, familiar, satisfying things.

Renewed discourse has shown recurring double standards on what kind of flaws are considered "okay" for female vs male characters
After a substantial amount of work, I am pleased to announce new Historical #Dictionary of #ScienceFiction entries for the #fandom sense of _alternate universe_, & for its shortened form _AU_. 1977 & 1993 respectively. Feedback welcome!

"The people who speak with the most authority online are usually the people who know the least. That seems to be a pretty fair theorem." — Tony Gilroy

A recent discussion about #inclusivity on one of the goth groups I follow got a bit heated, and the admins pulled the plug. Okay, it happens. Hardly anyone wants people screaming at each other in their virtual living room.
Every subculture I've ever been part of has had the same problem. #Punk, #goth, #science #fiction #fandom, #hackerdom, maybe a few I'm not thinking of at the moment.
#Subcultures are *in general* more accepting and inclusive than society as a whole, yes. People who are seen as weird and scary by the #mainstream find groups of other people who have had the same experience. This leads to groups that welcome refugees of all kinds. All to the good.
Then the idea becomes part of the group's identity. Instead of understanding that people in the group tend to be more tolerant than others because of their experiences, they start assuming that being part of the group automatically *makes* them less prejudiced.
"We can't be racist / sexist / etc., that's a mundane problem!" So when these "mundane" #bigotries turn up in the subculture, as they *inevitably* do, they get swept under the rug.
Yeah, well, you can be, and very often you are. Face it. Deal with it. Be better than the people who made your life hell. Or at the very least, stop acting so hurt and surprised when you get called on your own brand of bullshit.

Never would have watched that video without your rec. Never thought of Garfield as a strip about depression, but that scans. I would have thought Cathy is more like that, but it doesn't lend itself to ironically eldritch horror.
There is also something the video seems to miss. Jon is never alone. Girlfriends, restaurants, and jobs may go, but Garfield never does. I hate that last fan art panel where he defeats Garfield. Jon would be lonely and sad without Garfield's chaos.

New episode of The Comfortable Spot #podcast!
This time, I’m joined by a very special co-host—my daughter Lidia—who helped me interview the amazing Briana Lawrence (@BrichibiTweets), writer & #anime historian.
We had a magical chat about #fandom, #identity & #storytelling.

He has an abundance of accolades and the final instalment of the Edinburgh Nights series is due in October 2025.
To make some noise for the newly independent wikis, https://undertale.wiki as well as https://deltarune.wiki are now live. Congratulations on their successful fork from Fandom!
Even though the community vote on the fork ended just recently, the websites must have been prepared waaaaaay beforehand as they seem to be:
- completely independently hosted
- domain registered a year ago
- Discussions backend uses Discourse, which I don't think I've seen before on wikis?
- There are some kinks to iron out, but the fork seems to be pretty quality.
This was also some very quick reaction based on incoming Deltarune releases.
My utmost respect goes to KockaAdmiralac for leadership on this move.
Also a reminder of https://getindie.wiki/ existence, Undertale and Deltarune wikis will show up there as soon as the extension gets accepted in browser stores.
You know what it's like when you are super tired and you put on a you tube video so you can turn your mind off, and then you realize that it is super long.
This one was pretty good.
