You might believe that there are literally #NatureSpirits- entities of Life/Energy that surround us or you may feel this is a metaphor for the awe/respect we feel for the natural world, the complex unfolding of natural rhythms/ processes.
A short video + a couple of rough sketches expanding on the idea in the video (maybe later I'll have time to do a proper drawing). These are Laumas- kind of #woodland #fairy #fate guardian or cautionary spirit

Looking down at a smallish old tree stump in a snowy woodland with low afternoon light coming from one side, casting blue shadows on the snow. The stump rises just a hand or two above the snow, has some snow on top and is covered in moss and lichens. It is ringed by a handful of skinny poplar saplings and wild rose stems. I suggest in the video that if we see with more than our eyes perhaps we will see this as fairies or sprites dancing around a mossy altar.

It is based on the idea in the video of spirits dancing around a woodland altar. there are 3 figures, vaguely female each with one arm raised one arm down, limbs thin and simple with no hands or feet shown. between them is a round altar or stump. The two on the left are lost in the dance, celebration, reverence, one looking up, one down. The faces are simplified, and suggestive of ancient Christian iconography. They represent the sacred and transcendant. The figure on the right looks directly at the viewer, an interloper in this sacred grove, sacred woodland. She/they has a flat or even menacing expression, reminding us that the Laumas, the forest spirits, also guard against those of greedy or ill intentions.

More colour and background have been added. The figures are outlined in blue, navy, violet, bodies filled in a bit with palest blue and yellow with white, reflecting their snowy surroundings. These icey colours continue on the ground and around them, up into the evergreen trees behind them and the golden and dull green of the trees continues a bit on the figures especially their hair. The stump appears almost drum like, golden green for moss, and snow dusted. Have you ever sustained damage to your car by something falling off a truck in front of you? That is something that I've experienced a few times. Once from a pickup hauling firewood, once from a piece of an old washing machine, also from a pickup, and most recently from a tractor trailer rig that had a blow out and a piece of recapped tire hit my windshield. In fact, in all of these events the projectile hit my windshield. When this happens you, it is extra frustrating because you are just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Karma or fate? I believe we make our own karma or fate ... hmmm ... that thought doesn't help at all, does it?

I wish it was more common for #TTRPG books to explain the philosophy behind their systems, and also explain why the more complex mechanics are designed the way that they are

I think I would've understood #Fate a lot more quickly and easily (and gotten interested in it immediately!) if I had first learned that its goals were:

  • keep the focus on the fiction - not the mechanics
  • Fate should help to steer the story in interesting directions by emulating the flow of fiction
  • Fate's mechanics should be generic enough that they become a universal vocabulary to describe any situation or player action
  • Fate is made to be hacked and tinkered with

I've been rereading Fate System Toolkit and there are a few ideas in that book that don't seem to follow the above philosophy. I've been wondering if I'm just missing a good reason for the complexity, or if the book is deliberately giving examples of ways to make Fate into more of a D&D-type RPG game (which is totally fine!), in case people want to know how to do that
