i had lost touch with political prisoner Hridindu Roychowdhury for a little bit, but recently found out that he had been transferred to county jail (and thus without any programming and likely without any of his prior possessions) as punishment for refusing to cooperate with a federal grand jury. in effect, his federal sentence is frozen in time, even while he's still being jailed for contempt for refusing to snitch.

Hridindu is a total gem, broadly knowledgable, supremely affable, varied in interests and skills, all around charming individual -- and more than that, a committed anarchist who acted directly against the rising tide of fascistic christian nationalism in the u.s. and took a principled stand in refusing to cooperate with the state.

please write him a note of support, encouragement or solidarity so that he knows people have his back while he faces renewed state repression. his address is:

Tomorrow is the International Day of Solidarity with Long-Term Anarchist Prisoners (or, simply, June 11th, because the full name is a mouthful) and we're marking the date with a fundraiser!

Last year we raised almost $900 for freedom fighters inside the prison system, and this year we're aiming to break a grand by donating net proceeds from every single sale we make in-store and online!

Every book, t-shirt, sticker, or other item you purchase Wednesday will generate funds for prisoner commissary, legal defense, and other crucial support needs.

So, grab your next read, and then, if you're local, head next door to The Odd, where BRABC is organizing a benefit concert featuring four bands, local art, and a raffle. For more information on June 11th, check out june11.noblogs.org, where you can also find a list of individuals supported by the campaign.

"I wouldn't have made it this far without books. In prison, reading is not so much a means of escape as a survival mechanism. Books become tools of diverse purpose within the penitentiary; not only do they combat loneliness, but they are also barriers against isolation. Books will build you up more effectively than any time spent in the yard's weight pit, and the information they impart will protect you far better than a sharpened shiv."
—Lee Doane, as quoted by Victoria Law in "Books Through Bars: Stories From the Prison Books Movement"

Here's a recent photo we snapped of abolitionist titles being modified before being mailed to an individual incarcerated in the Southeast. Because the facility doesn't allow hardbacks, we were asked to strip the covers, which we did as carefully as we could to avoid damaging the integrity of the book spine.

Prisons take a hostile view of even the smallest forms of care and solidarity expressed for those under their control. They outright ban tens of thousands of titles, only allow books from approved retailers (or *only* Amazon), regularly delay delivery by weeks, and, increasingly, want to restrict physical books entirely, forcing prisoners to access e-books. Banning physical books is a way to further squeeze profits out of prisoners while undermining both solidarity from outside and mutual aid within facilities.

Want to make a difference and learn how people are fighting back against prison book bans? You can join Asheville Prison Books today at 1pm for a packaging party at our co-op!

MALIK IS ON HUNGER STRIKE AND NEEDS YOUR HELP! (picture of Malik and child)
2020 uprising rebel and political prisoner Malik Muhammad is currently being held in solitary confinement. Prison staff took away all of his property and put him in a cell with no bed, no blanket, and no shirt. He has a slipped disk in his back and previous shoulder injuries that make sleeping on the hard floor torturously painful, and he cannot be sleeping without a bed. Prison staff have also been blasting the AC in his cell nonstop and kept it punishingly freezing. Malik has been on hunger strike since May 13 and will continue until prison staff give him a bed and blanket and return his rightful property to him. (photo of Malik)

"Hello, I'm calling to demand that OSP staff end their persecution of Malik Muhammad #23935744, who is bravely on hunger strike to protest being held in torturous conditions in solitary confinement. OSP staff are violating his human rights and have a legal responsibility to provide him with adequate living conditions. OSP staff must immediately provide him with a bed, a blanket, adequate clothing, reasonable room temperature, and any other medical needs he has due to his health conditions. OSP staff must also immediately return his rightful property to him and restore his communication and visitation rights. End this injustice against Malik now!"
