#COVID cases and hospitalizations appear to be dropping in #NYC after a relatively small spring wave, while #flu and #RSV cases continue to drop!

Let's hope we'll get down to relatively low baselines on all three until the next wave. Do we dare to hope that we won't see a summer #COVID19 wave?

I'm back to in-person karaoke now, but until the combined hospitalizations are at truly negligeable rates, like below one per day, I'll continue to #WearAMask in elevators, trains and doctors' offices!

#Flu season is mostly over, but #CDC is still hearing of pediatric flu deaths from this winter; 10 more were reported in the week ending 4/12. Brings the year's total to 198. Reports come in on a delay; there will likely be more. One of the worst years since CDC started collecting peds deaths data.

#Smartwatches Could Flatten The Curve Of The Next #Pandemic

Researchers at Aalto University, Stanford University, and Texas A&M have found that the illness detection features common to modern smartwatches are advanced enough to help people make the call to stay home or #mask up and avoid getting others sick. They note we’re already at 88% accuracy for early detection of #COVID19 and 90% for the #flu.

I wish I could say that #flu and #RSV cases were going down faster in #NYC, but I'm glad to see that they're still going down. No sign of an out-of-season wave or a shallow trough!

Let's hope that COVID rates will also go down, and we'll have a nice quiet, safe spring and summer for infectious disease transmission!

Today In Labor History April 9, 1930: The IWW organized the 1700-member crew of the Leviathan, the world’s largest ship. Originally a German passenger ship, the U.S. seized it in 1917, during World War I, when it was docked in New York harbor. The U.S. subsequently used it to transport its troops to Europe. In September, 1918, the Leviathan left New Jersey, filled with men dying from Influenza. Dozens perished from the flu on the passage over.

COVID numbers are going up, but #flu and #RSV cases continue to drop in #NYC. We still don't have accurate hospitalization numbers for #influenza and #RSVirus here, but it looks like the overall risk of hospitalization and death from acute airborne infectious diseases is dropping.

I'm going to plan for indoor dining and singing, and maybe travel, but as long as this many people are dying and being hospitalized I'll #WearAMask in elevators, trains, doctor's offices, pharmacies and supermarkets!

Wife was feeling bad for a couple days, did a #covid and #flu test came back negative for all. It's probably allergies which she has pretty bad. Perhaps a secondary bit of lung infection. Having #OCD I see the negative tests and it takes about 5 minutes for me to think 🤔 "maybe it's RSV"

No worse than the flu?

I've lost track of how many different ways this claim is false. But here's yet another:

Healthcare workers with chronic condition miss more days of work due to COVID than flu

Cases of #flu and #RSV in #NYC continue to fall, a week or two later than they did last year. Unfortunately, cases and hospitalizatios of #COVID are going up.

I'm going to be pissed if we have a full-blown Spring #COVID19 wave and I have to start moving karaoke online, after months of not singing in person to avoid spreading #influenza and #RSVirus!

While there are meaningful numbers of people being hospitalized for airborne diseases, I #WearAMask in elevators, trains and doctors' offices!

This has been a bad #flu season for all ages, with #CDC estimating 43M illnesses, 560K hospitalizations & 24K deaths from flu so far this season. It's been a bad year for pediatric flu deaths. Though flu activity is subsiding, this figure will continue to climb because reports are often delayed. cdc.gov/fluview/surveillance/2

FluViewWeekly US Influenza Surveillance Report: Key Updates for Week 11, ending March 15, 2025By CDC

Flu cases remain high across much of the country, including Washington state, as the CDC warns this is the first “high severity season” in seven years. In Washington, flu-related deaths have reached their highest level since the 2017-2018 season, with 296 lab-confirmed deaths reported so far in 2024-2025 and over 6 months still left to go in this year’s season. #Flu seasons are measured from the 40th week of one year to the 39th week of the following year, or roughly from October to the following September.
