Emeritus Prof Christopher May
50 funky tracks for your streaming pleasure, No.34

War. Me & Baby Brother

I was spoilt for choice in choosing a funky vibe from War, but decided I'd go for this slice of muscular funk. Great relentless rhythm playing, counterpointed with some great organ work (replacing the normal funk horns) and backing chanted vocals to produce a dynamic bit of funkiness.

You might also check out Low Rider or Galaxy for different versions of War's funk, both great in different ways.

#Funky50 #music #funk

Emeritus Prof Christopher May
50 funky tracks for your streaming pleasure, No.33

Aaron Neville. Hercules

This great piece of political funk from the Neville Brothers (backing brother Aaron) is a wonderful swirling bit of mesmeric music making. The relaxed shuffle rhythm driven by a lovely piano line, backs a set of thoughtful political lyrics, again demonstrating how the funk can be a vehicle for protest music. A piece of sublime genius - enjoy!

#Funky50 #Music #funk

Emeritus Prof Christopher May
50 funky tracks for your streaming pleasure, No.32

Brick. Good High

from its slight echo of the theme to Bullitt in the intro, this infectious bit of funk from Brick has a great springy rhythm laced with a fabulous horn arrangements. The chanted vocals, some strings & a bit of start-stop funkiness get the whole package moving to a great danceable groove.

(And if you like this check out their earlier Dusic, another bouncy funky classic)

#Funky50 #music #funk

Emeritus Prof Christopher May
50 funky tracks for your streaming pleasure, No.31

Earth Wind & Fire. Saturday Night

This bit of funk from EWF edges towards their later disco output but retains a great funk sensibility. A great rhythm allied to some fabulous horn section work & EWF's usual vocal arrangements, make for a (perhaps) poppier feel, but it's still got that funkiness that gets it included here. Just joyful & a real floor filler!

#Funky50 #music #funk

Emeritus Prof Christopher May
50 funky tracks for your streaming pleasure, No.30

Parliament. Mothership Connection (Star Child)

As promised another slice of PFunk & this classic track from Parliament is a great example of the complex, multilayered funk of the PFunksters. Emeritus Prof Christopher May
50 funky tracks for your streaming pleasure, No.28

Millie Jackson. I Cry

Just to prove you can be just as funky at a low tempo, Millie Jackson's brilliant I Cry delivers a great groove with all the normal funk elements (from wha wha guitar, to a solid rhythm section) but at a relaxed tempo. And I just love those swirling strings, and of course Jackson raspy vocals are so distinctive. A great slice of funk for Friday!

#Funky50 #music #funk

Emeritus Prof Christopher May
50 funky tracks for your streaming pleasure, No.27

Sons of Slum. What Goes Around (Must Come Around)

This slab of Stax funk is driven by a stuttering rhythm section with great horn stabs (of course), and some funky electric piano playing. Its a classic bit of start/stop funkiness, driving forward some political lyrics, to produce a groove that is irresistible. As so often, some of the best soul/funk has a political sensibility, too often ignored!

#Funky50 #music #funk

Emeritus Prof Christopher May
50 funky tracks for your streaming pleasure, No.26

Isaac Hayes. Joy

If you only know Isaac Hayes from his celebrated soundtrack to Shaft, prepare for 16 minutes of mesmeric funkiness. Joy is one of his long-form soul masterpieces, and has a wonderful late night funky grooviness. Alternating between sparseness & lush sections I just love the symphonic ambition of the track, its great rhythmic syncopation & the use of the strings & horns for punctuation.
