The rocks at Pemaquid Point Lighthouse for #TextureTuesday. I finally had the chance to visit Pemaquid Point in Bristol, Maine the other day when I happened to be in the area. I was really blown away by the fascinating and beautiful geology of the area around the lighthouse.

According to the Maine Geological Survey, the rocks here are mostly metamorphic with some igneous. The gray layered rock is called gneiss and it was originally sediments at the bottom of the ocean that were metamorphosed 360-415 million years ago into what you see here. The light gray/whitish igneous rock is called pegmatite.

Book Review: The Magician of the Gods

This book starts with the story of J. Harlan Bretz. In the 1920s, Bretz proposed that the scablands in eastern Washington were caused by cataclysmic flooding event rather than gradual erosion. Bretz was almost laughed out the geological profession for making this claim. Decades later, he was vindicated.

Sometimes crazy ideas are proven right.

@nev asked if I'd ever been in a lava tube, and the answer is yes, multiple times! Lava tube caves are cool, and are varied in size, shape, and formations, just like limestone caves. Here is a photo in a lava tube cave with my little bat buddy for scale to show some of the variety of textures and colors that can be found. If ya'all like this, I can post some lava tube cave geology / formation type stuff! Comment to let me know what you'd like to see...passage? formations? critters that call these places home?

Dracheneier? Nein.

80 meter inside of a volcano of Lemptegy. It was exploited for a pouzzolane but in agreement with the volcanologists that they would conserve certain parts of it. As a result, you can really take a walk inside of it and see how the world evolved. What you can see there on the photo is a volcanic chimney, through which the fresh lava got onto the surface.

This is cool (to me), I had a physical geology class at UofU and the emeritus professor was kind of losing it, he said plate tectonics was wrong, everything could be explained by triple junctions, like mud cracks... It was kind of great (for the students) because they brought in these specialized profs (retiring the emeritus) who taught us their specialty for a week at a time. But we never heard the reasons for the E/W Uintas, which are beautiful mountains if you ever get a chance 😍
