“_Our findings provide evidence for a large amplitude drawdown in the Ionian Basin during the MSC, support the scenario of a Mediterranean-wide catastrophic flood at the end of the MSC, and suggest that the identified sedimentary body is the largest known megaflood deposit on Earth._”

I have been digging out my old copies of John McPhee's #books, dipping in, remembering what it was like to be a new #geologist, and how it has carried across into #spatial #data, #geomorphology, #geomorphometry, #hydrology, #landcover, #engineeringgeology, #environmentalscience, #landuse, #massmovement and so much more......
This one paragraph reminded me so strongly of that time,, although I cannot of course write as eloquently:

"I used to sit in class and listen to the terms come floating down the room like paper airplanes. Geology was called a descriptive science, and with its pitted outwash plains and drowned rivers, its hanging tributaries and starved coastlines, it was nothing if not descriptive. It was a fountain of metaphor—of isostatic adjustments and degraded channels, of angular unconformities and shifting divides, of rootless mountains and bitter lakes..."

Every time I look at such things, the (engineering) geologist, geomorphologist, (pseudo) hydrologist, spatial data scientist in me is made happy in being reminded what access we have to (often open) spatial data and the sheer volume of it, and the use cases for which it can be leveraged.
We are lucky professionals…

A rare Dutch addition this week is De Thigmofiel by one of my favourite Dutch biologists, #MidasDekkers. Lastly, I offered sanctuary to a damaged copy of #Evolution and Fossil Record of African #Proboscidea from CRC Press

Cell colors note the number of 10-m cells within a 90-m grid cell where the slope-relief threshold is exceeded. Cell counts are classified using equal interval bins. Susceptibility maps do not account for the likely frequency or magnitude of landslides; this map reflects the degree to which local topographic conditions are consistent with our previously observed landslides across the country.

📢 Ecologists! Bird people! Geomorphologists! Do these dinstinctive wee pointy grassy landform things have a name (in any language(s))? They're quite common on low rocky summits around the Mull coast - this one is near Kintra. I think they might be caused by sea-bird guano fertilization, but that's just a guess... Keep an eye on that oxbow.

'The ultimate plan, he said, is to rebuild the Dam Store near where it was originally located.

'But he said there is only a sliver of the 2 acres of land they owned that hasn’t been washed into the river. “So we’ll have to talk to the county and the neighbors to see if we could get some property from them to build on out there.”'
