Miguel Afonso Caetano<p>"Scale AI is basically a data annotation hub that does essential grunt work for the AI industry. To train an AI model, you need quality data. And for that data to mean anything, an AI model needs to know what it's looking at. Annotators manually go in and add that context.</p><p>As is the means du jour in corporate America, Scale AI built its business model on an army of egregiously underpaid gig workers, many of them overseas. The conditions have been described as "digital sweatshops," and many workers have accused Scale AI of wage theft.</p><p>It turns out this was not an environment for fostering high-quality work.</p><p>According to internal documents obtained by Inc, Scale AI's "Bulba Experts" program to train Google's AI systems was supposed to be staffed with authorities across relevant fields. But instead, during a chaotic 11 months between March 2023 and April 2024, its dubious "contributors" inundated the program with "spam," which was described as "writing gibberish, writing incorrect information, GPT-generated thought processes."</p><p>In many cases, the spammers, who were independent contractors who worked through Scale AI-owned platforms like Remotasks and Outlier, still got paid for submitting complete nonsense, according to former Scale contractors, since it became almost impossible to catch them all. And even if they did get caught, some would come back by simply using a VPN.</p><p>"People made so much money," a former contributor told Inc. "They just hired everybody who could breathe.""</p><p><a href="https://futurism.com/scale-ai-zuckerberg-incompetence" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">futurism.com/scale-ai-zuckerbe</span><span class="invisible">rg-incompetence</span></a></p><p><a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/AI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AI</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/GenerativeAI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>GenerativeAI</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Meta" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Meta</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/ScaleAI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ScaleAI</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/DataAnnotation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DataAnnotation</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/DataLabeling" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DataLabeling</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/GigWork" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>GigWork</span></a></p>

Different Than<p>So far, having signed up on notedsource.io, my experience is... nothing. I signed up. There is no interaction. There are no opportunities or even interesting bits of content. It's possible I'm using it wrong, but my best guess is that someone had an idea for a "marketplace for academics to connect with employers for work beyond academia", then they got some VC funding, spent it all on developing the site and running a bunch of ads, and now: nothing. </p><p>They hoped a bunch of academics signing up on a site would make some kind of magic happen? IDK. I don't see any evidence of employers of any kind. There are facilities (apparently) for creating academic "networks" or "work groups" or something, but there are already sites that do a better job of that, so I don't personally see any need that <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/notedsource" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>notedsource</span></a> fills.</p><p>They did require a fuckton of personal data just to make a profile, though (which I'm apparently only "65% complete" with).</p><p><a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/academic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>academic</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/professor" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>professor</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/privacy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>privacy</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/data" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>data</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/gigwork" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>gigwork</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/jobs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>jobs</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/startup" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>startup</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/venturecapital" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>venturecapital</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/vaporware" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>vaporware</span></a></p>

Chris Alemany🇺🇦🇨🇦🇪🇸<p>Today marks the 365th day since I started Door Dashing. </p><p>My first Dash was Dec 31, 2023.</p><p>It's a little slow tonight, as I thought it might be. But I won't be going out tomorrow night on New Years. So I'm hanging out in the parking lot, listening to tunes. 🎶 </p><p>This has turned into a 2nd job. </p><p>A reliable source of income to cover costs. It's by no means ideal. My car got rearended at a stoplight in June. </p><p>I have a sore shoulder some nights. </p><p>I would like to do other things on my evenings and weekends, but it hasn't been bad. </p><p>I enjoy it. I have actually got to engage more with hockey (both local <a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/bulldogs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>bulldogs</span></a> and NHL <a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/canucks" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>canucks</span></a>) by listening to radio broadcasts like the old days.</p><p>I've come to know my town a lot better. I've also come to know a much more broad variety of the people that call it home. </p><p>There is comeraderie between dashers as well as with restaurant workers. </p><p>Before, and when I started, I was frankly embarrassed, ashamed, that I was doing this.</p><p>What a stupid, privileged, ignorant attitude... totally unnecessary. </p><p>There should never be shame in working. </p><p>My family and friends have been so supportive. </p><p>I feel good and lucky to be able to do this. I am also grateful to live in a province that has forced the delivery companies to pay better wages.</p><p>Onward we go. Tip your delivery people if you can, but if you can't, that's ok too. </p><p>We're all just getting by the best we can. ❤️ 🍔 🍗 🍕 🥤 🍷 🌯 🚙 </p><p><a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/doordash" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>doordash</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/ubereats" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ubereats</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/SkipTheDishes" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SkipTheDishes</span></a><br><a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/gigwork" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>gigwork</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/workers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>workers</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/worklife" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>worklife</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/affordability" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>affordability</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/tags/delivery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>delivery</span></a></p>
Miguel Afonso Caetano<p>"Gig workers expressed that, after noticing frequent changes on the listing platforms that were made without their consent, they started to see themselves as laboratory rats rather than valued users. Because their messages were blocked by chatbots, they were unable to speak to the platform to complain or opt out of the changes. Frustration flared and apathy set in. Their income and well-being declined.</p><p>This is concerning, not only because of how it affects gig workers, but also because academics are increasingly becoming involved in designing digital experiments. Social scientists follow strict Institutional Review Board (IRB) procedures that govern the ethics of experiments involving people — such as informing them and requiring consent — but these rules don’t apply to technology companies. And that’s leading to questionable practices and potentially unreliable results.</p><p>Technology companies use their terms of service to authorize them to collect data without any obligation to inform people that they were involved, or provide any opportunity for them to withdraw. Thus, digital experimentation faces scant oversight."</p><p><a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-024-03674-x" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">nature.com/articles/d41586-024</span><span class="invisible">-03674-x</span></a></p><p><a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/GigEconomy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>GigEconomy</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/GigWork" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>GigWork</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Research" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Research</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/IRB" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>IRB</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/DigitalPlatforms" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DigitalPlatforms</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/ResearchEthics" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ResearchEthics</span></a></p>
