Developers, let's empower and protect users and the community by releasing your software under the #GNU #GPL. https://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-howto.html By doing so, you're taking a stand for user rights and defending against proprietary software. Your contributions can help move #FreeSoftware forward. Together, we can build software that belongs to everyone. Join the movement and make a difference! #SoftwareFreedom

« Posons-nous un instant la question : qu’est-ce que le #code #source d’un réseau de #neurones ? […] La #GPL fournit une définition : le code source est la forme de l’œuvre privilégiée pour effectuer des #modifications. Dans cette acception, le code source d’un réseau de neurones serait l’#algorithme d’entraînement, le réseau de neurones de départ et le #corpus sur lequel le réseau a été entraîné »

People share (a)gpl code on github. Github is not available everywhere (even read access I think).
Does that break the GPL?
"...must prominently offer all users interacting with it remotely through a computer network (if your version supports such interaction) an opportunity to receive the Corresponding Source of your version by providing access to the Corresponding Source from a network server at no charge, through some standard or customary means of facilitating copying of software"
(AGPL 3, section 13)
The dedication of @rms to the GNU project and his work on copyleft licenses have made a profound impact on the software world. Through the GPL, RMS has ensured that software users retain essential freedoms - freedoms to use, study, change and share. #FreeSoftware #SoftwareFreedom #GPL #Copyleft
@bkuhn any advice for choosing #copyleft #licenses for #Rust code?
In a recent thread you mentioned #LGPL and I'm curious about templating.
In my understanding it's not possible for the user to replace just the LGPLd library on their system, so it's effectively the same as #GPL .
I chose #MPL 2.0 instead.
Same problem exists in C++ template-only libraries, but I found no ultimate guide.
Are you aware of any?
We're gonna be doing one thing, and one thing only. Killing @ubuntu.
In 1989, we published the GNU #GPL. It is at the core of #SoftwareFreedom and it protects users' rights to run, copy, modify, and share. Read more about #FreeSoftware licensing https://www.fsf.org/licensing
By requiring modified and extended versions of software to remain free, cpyleft ensures that software remains free for all its users, not just some of them. https://www.gnu.org/licenses/copyleft.en.html #FreeSoftware #SoftwareFreedom #GNU #GPL #Copyleft
I really wish #uutils was under a copyleft license. It’s cool but using it just makes it easier for mega corps to lock down things even more. Yah #rust / #rustlang is faster and more secure, but #GPL is better for society.
If we were using uutils in 2005 we wouldn’t have the free routers that we have now. I don’t want to think what could be lost if we just drop all things #GPL for mit license stuff. It’s just helping megacorps at societies expense.
This video is about Ubuntu replacing GNU coreutils that have a GPL license with a Rust-based implementation called uutils that has an MIT license. It touts the higher safety of rust and improved performance for a few tools like sort. But it points out that the license makes it such that improvements to the code can be kept proprietary and goes against the general Linux ethos.
#FreeSoftwareFoundation rides to defend #AGPLv3 against #Neo4j license add-ons

"At stake is the future of not just the AGPLv3, but the #FSF's widely used GNU Public License it is largely based on, and the software covered by those agreements."

yeah, the entire film was made in Blender, the director even specifically switched to it because of it's preview feature. #OpenSource #GPL #Blender

An appeals court may kill a #GNU #GPL software license - https://www.theregister.com/2025/02/27/adverse_appeals_court_ruling_could/ "It will create a dangerous legal precedent that could be used to undermine all open-source licenses" potentially very bad #licensing
#EA today released as #opensource #CommandAndConquer Tiberian Dawn, Red Alert, Renegade, and Generals - Zero Hour. The #game #sourcecode is now under a #GPL license and available for the fan community to modify and extend as well as allowing these games to build on platforms moving forward.
Beyond just making the old source code available, EA has enabled #SteamWorkshop support for more Command and Conquer titles.

#Appealscourt may kill a #GNU #GPL software license
If #appellatecourt upholds Neo4j v. PureThink decision, which endorsed database maker #Neo4j's right to amend GNU Affero General Public License, version 3 (#AGPL), governing use of its software with new binding terms, current assumptions about enforceability of #copyleft licenses will no longer apply. Issue before appeals court boils down to the right to remove contractual restrictions added to the terms of the #APGLv3.
