Heatwave takes out the power grid in Iraq.

"...Power has gone out across Iraq as scorching summer temperatures pushed electricity grid demand to unprecedented levels.... The electricity ministry said the grid suffered a "total outage" after two transmission lines were shut down "due to a record rise in temperatures, increased consumer demand, and increased electrical load in the provinces of Babylon and Karbala, which are experiencing an influx of millions of pilgrims" for a major Shiite Muslim commemoration."

…The #DataCenters needed to accommodate the #ArtificialIntelligence boom are still in the regulatory planning stages, & the Data Center Coalition, which represents #BigTech firms & data center developers, has said its members are committed to paying their fair share.

But growing evidence suggests that the #electricity #bills of some Americans are rising to subsidize the massive #energy needs of Big Tech as the US competes in a race against China for #AI superiority.

“A lot of this #infrastructure, billions of dollars of it, is being built just for a few customers & a few facilities & these happen to be the wealthiest companies in the world,” said Ari Peskoe, who directs the Electricity #Law Initiative at Harvard University. “I think some of the fundamental assumptions behind all this just kind of breaks down.”

Rising #power #bills are “something legislators have been hearing a lot about. It’s something we’ve been hearing a lot about. More people are speaking out at the public utility commission in the past year than I’ve ever seen before,” said Charlotte Shuff of the Oregon Citizens’ Utility Board, a consumer advocacy group. “There’s a massive outcry.”

"Every website emits CO2. Behind some links, you may even find the carbon footprint equivalent to that of a plastic bag. Over the past decade, the average size of a mobile website has increased sixfold to 2,011 KB — that's more content than the combined length of three Harry Potter novels."

High Country News: The West’s data centers suck (water and power)

From simple searches to chatGPT, the big digital buildup threatens the grid and water supplies.

"“Sustainable” bitcoin mining is an oxymoron, given the enormous amounts of power and water data centers consume...The International Energy Agency predicts that data centers’ electricity and water consumption will both double by 2030, driven largely by AI-related demand. That in turn threatens to max out existing electricity generation, strain power grids, and — if fossil fuels are used — increase carbon emissions. "

I've noticed a persistent issue with using grid and aspect-ratio on mobile. Basically the aspect-ratio, even a basic 4/3, is overflowing the grid instead of resizing with it. I either have to replace grid w/ flex in mobile (and it works) or remove the aspect-ratio completely (and it works).

Has anyone else noticed this??

"Last week Trump🚨directed by EO that even the renewable projects the Senate salvaged in the budget law wouldn't get tax credits. 95.7% of all new electric cap this year has been #solar & #wind. Many of those projects won't pencil now.

Call it the Blackout Law.

Side agreements with the HFC will make most clean-energy projects unviable & leave the US with not enough power to meet demand."

Democracy dies in darkness (literally).

Current power outages in the US. Looks like the grid is holding up right now in the midwest/east coast, despite the record loads.

…The #US #aluminum industry is too small to replace imports from #Canada without massive expansion & investment.

Century Aluminum, a US aluminum maker, said last year that it would build the first new #AluminumSmelter in the United States in half a century, doubling domestic production. But the United States would remain dependent on imports for most of its aluminum.

The #Aluminium Assn of #Canada said in a statement on Tues that the expanded #tariff “makes Canadian exports to the US economically unviable” & that “the industry may be forced to diversify #trade toward the #EuropeanUnion.”

#Electricity accounts for about 40% of the cost of smelting aluminum, & the trade group estimated that replacing Canadian aluminum w/ #US production would require the expansion of US power generation equivalent to 4 Hoover Dams.
