Florian<p>Alright folx, time for a new vict...I mean... chapter. Tomorrow, we'll be taking our first look at <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/hackTheBox" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>hackTheBox</span></a>, primarily <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/HTb" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>HTb</span></a> Academy. Often considered a less handholdy <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/tryHackMe" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>tryHackMe</span></a>, this is another fantastic resource for getting folks new to <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/infosec" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>infosec</span></a> skilled up. But how do they fare where <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/accessibility" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>accessibility</span></a> is concerned? Better than THM? Worse? We'll have to see.<br>Checking this out tomorrow at 3 PM EST, 9 PM CEST. I'm making a bunch of noise behind the scenes, let's see if we can get some folks who actually work there to sit up and take notice. I'm only just getting started though, intending to cover a wide variety of different things, from more <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/FOSS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>FOSS</span></a> tools, audio/video editing, programming and hacking tools etc.<br>Today's stream will be more <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/tryHackMe" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>tryHackMe</span></a> content, with a look at <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/HackTheBox" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>HackTheBox</span></a> Academy next week. Taggart :donor:<p><span>I'm often asked about note-taking strategies—especially with regard to notes while undertaking challenges like </span><a href="https://infosec.town/tags/HackTheBox" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#HackTheBox</a><span> or </span><a href="https://infosec.town/tags/TryHackMe" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#TryHackMe</a><span> "rootme" machines.<br><br>Here's the thing: taking notes during the box is nowhere near as important as what you do afterwards.<br><br>In order to demonstrate (to yourself) that you understand what's happening, you need to explain in writing or speech how the box was rooted. If at any point you find there's a part you can't explain, then you need to go back and research that part of it.<br><br>That explanation not only demonstrates that you've internalized the concepts, but the very act of creating the explanation ("telling the story" of the box) is what you will </span><i><span>actually remember later</span></i><span>. <br><br>Our brains are wired to remember narratives, and so creating a narrative of the box essentially converts the information into a file format your brain can easily recall. Then later, when you need to remember this information, you will be able to remember the story you told, not just the raw experiences.</span></p>

Malware Miner 49er<p>Since it’s recommended to do an <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/introduction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>introduction</span></a>, here’s mine:</p><p>I have been a data center operations engineer for the past five years for a major cloud and virtualization company. I have a side hustle installing home theater systems, sound systems, and security/surveillance systems. I have been interested in the <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/cybersecurity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>cybersecurity</span></a> space ever since Stuxnet, but have been seriously working towards entering the field since I graduated from university in 2021. </p><p>My <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/goal" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>goal</span></a> is to enter the field as a <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/SOC" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SOC</span></a> analyst, or equivalent role, for an internal SOC or MSP, by the end of next year. All the advice I have read/listen to was to not take any shortcuts and learn the fundamentals first. So I obtained the <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/CompTIA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>CompTIA</span></a> A+, Network+, and have scheduled the Security+ for January. I enjoy learning with <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/hackthebox" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>hackthebox</span></a> tutorials, and completed several SOC training courses (including Black Hills Information Security &amp; LetsDefendIO). I have been following many SMEs within the industry on the bird site for many years (@cyber49er). Looking forward to connecting with you all here. </p><p>And many thanks to <span class="h-card"><a href="https://infosec.exchange/@jerry" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>jerry</span></a></span> for putting this instance together!</p>
