Met this little chap at Skylark. No bloody idea what he is. What a fluffy little bum he has! Look at it! Such floof. Wow. It's like the golden retriever of hovering insects.

Look at the size of his proboscis! Ravishing that little flower.

Edit: thanks to all the folks who pointed out that this is a Bee Fly! Fabulous little fuzzball.

A hovering insect with a very fluffy body, hovering above a small star-shaped 6-petal pale mauve flower... the insect has a very long black proboscis inserted down into the yellow centre of the flower.

A Big-Assed Hoverfly (officially, Hornet Mimic Hoverfly or Volucella zonaria) having a quick drinky on some buddleia nectar. This is the largest species of hoverfly in the UK (just under an inch in length).

Females lay their eggs inside the nests of hornets and wasps, where they hatch and hang out for a while before pupating underground overwinter and hatching the following Spring.

New ability discovered: Buzz Pollination

A medium-sized glossy insect hangs at the bottom of a cluster of mauve and yellow buddleia flowers. It has black stripes on its yellow body, and large eyes with a thick yellow face in between. Its wings point out and backward but we can't see them well as we're looking from the side. Its legs are red, becoming black toward their feet. The background is blurry green from vegetation
