Dj PorCus - Will<p>Hey Fedi world ! I'm looking for my next laptop. I was using a X1 Gen6 for ages, was really happy about it. I tried a X1 Gen11 which was a mistake, the webcam will not be supported (<a href="https://hostux.social/tags/linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>linux</span></a>) soon, and the screen format is not my style so much. That's 2 good reason try another one. An easy one would be a <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://fosstodon.org/@frameworkcomputer" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>frameworkcomputer</span></a></span> but they still don't deliver in .ch, nor will they answer my requests to become a reseller. Any other ideas ? I'm a <a href="https://hostux.social/tags/LMDE" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>LMDE</span></a> , <a href="https://hostux.social/tags/i3wm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>i3wm</span></a> user and a network engineer. Torstein Krause Johansen<p>The way I work in 2025. A fun tour through my workstation setup: i3, Firefox, Emacs and shortcuts galore. Theming and translucency. stib<p>Been tweaking my <a href="https://aus.social/tags/Rofi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Rofi</span></a> theme, because it was rainy and I was too knackered to do anything else useful today. Rofi is an application switcher and more (calculator, character picker, launcher, weather widget, etc.). It is used in minimalist window managers like <a href="https://aus.social/tags/i3wm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>i3wm</span></a>, instead of a top-bar, dock or Start™ menu. <br>I used to use <a href="https://aus.social/tags/Litestep" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Litestep</span></a> on Windows, and using i3 and Rofi to DIY my own graphical shell feels similar.<br><a href="https://aus.social/tags/Linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Linux</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/Ricing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Ricing</span></a></p>

Robin Jayasinghe<p>Back in the days I was a die-hard <a href="https://chaos.social/tags/i3wm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>i3wm</span></a> user. So the concepts are not new to me. For the Mac I chose <a href="https://chaos.social/tags/aerospace" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>aerospace</span></a> which feels pretty similar to i3.</p>
stib<p>What is great about <a href="https://aus.social/tags/i3wm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>i3wm</span></a> is that if you want the application switcher to also include info like the time and what it's like outside, you can just tweak some config files, set up a systemd timer to run a script that fetches the data from wttr.in, and you get the time and weather right there in your application switcher. <br>What's not so great about i3wm is that you can tweak some config files, set up a systemd timer to run a script that fetches the data from wttr.in, and get the time and weather right in your application switcher, then start thinking about some other tweaks you could do, and hello it's 1 in the morning and you haven't actually done that actual thing you sat down at the computer to do.<br>(What is brilliant is that the person who actually developed the <a href="https://aus.social/tags/rofi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>rofi</span></a> application switcher will help you when you ask on the github discussion page).<br><a href="https://aus.social/tags/Linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Linux</span></a></p>

Devin Prater :blind:<p>For those who are interested in alternative ways to use a Linux interface, there are things even lighter than desktop environments, called window managers. Claudine C :antifa:<p>Because I'm bad at throwing things away, I have two Intel MacBooks Pro (2012 and 2018) sitting at home not doing anything. I haven't looked at the state of <a href="https://aus.social/tags/Linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Linux</span></a> on the desktop/laptop since before 2012, except for a brief moment around 2020 when I was between Macs and attempted to use my Raspberry Pi as my everyday – not quite up to the demands of my job.</p><p>What distros should I look at for tinkering on older Intel Macs?
