Melting in a Spin

The world’s largest iceberg A23a is spinning in a Taylor column off the Antarctic coast. This poster looks at a miniature version of the problem with a fluorescein-dyed ice slab slowly melting in water. On the left, the model iceberg is melting without rotating. The melt water stays close to the base until it forms a narrow, sinking plume. In the center, the ice rotates, which moves the detachment point outward. The wider plume is turbulent compared to the narrow, non-rotating one. At higher rotation speeds (right), the plume is even wider and more turbulent, causing the fastest melting rate. Jellyfish and Iceberg by Galice Horau

A lion’s mane jellyfish swims past an iceberg in Greenland, 2019. Autumn in the East Greenland fjords, near Tasiilaq, is teeming with life, especially planktonic species ranging from tiny copepods to large jellyfish such as this lion’s mane jellyfish (Cyanea capillata) with its long stinging tentacles drifting elegantly through the water.

Scientists thought this Antarctic sea floor would be barren. But it's teeming with life
When the crew aboard an ocean science expedition learned that an iceberg the size of Chicago had broken off from an Antarctic ice shelf, they knew they had to stop what they were doing and go check it out. But they didn't expect to find a rich and flourishing ecosystem.

…The scientists didn’t think much life could thrive tucked under such a thick blanket of ice.

But what the team members found under the #iceberg surprised them: giant sea spiders, octopuses, ice fish, corals & sponges, including a vase-shaped one that might be hundreds of years old. In total, the researchers believe they will be able to identify dozens of #NewSpecies from the expedition.

It's been a crazy time which has affected my posting. Archie is settling in well, but we are training him to be better equipped to have alone time. And then there is the chaos of the world situation at the moment.

It's hard to find calmness. This image is called Jagged Mirror, which many of you will identify as being taken in Jökulsárlón Iceland. A heavily touristed location, but having visited it for over a decade, a pretty special one.

World's biggest iceberg appears to have run aground near remote British island
The world's largest iceberg appears to have run aground off the coast of a remote British island home to millions of penguins and seals — potentially threatening local wildlife, but also providing an opportunity for research into such rare "megabergs."
