So I stood there at the side of the road, while waiting for the people at U-Haul to figure out how to rescue my beached whale and the household full of stuff it contained. Eventually a huge #wrecker turned up, the kind that is as long as a semi with a full-sized trailer, picked up the front end of the U-Haul, and hauled it into town, to my house, where we would need to unload.

My house, in a neighbourhood from the 1910s, with tiny houses, narrow lots, and narrow streets. And full props to the driver, he parallel-parked-by-proxy that U-Haul in a space directly in front of my house that was barely big enough for it.

Got it unloaded, then the wrecker came back and hauled it away.

Takeaways:

1. Real professional #drivers are amazing at what they do.

2. U-Haul #trucks and #equipment are horribly maintained, because the incentives work against the franchisees doing anything but renting them out and hoping it's a one-way rental so they never see it again. Be prepared to deal with problems. Do a *serious* walk-around #inspection for #safety issues before you even think about taking it on the highway.

3. Not illustrated in this story, but U-Haul reservations ... aren't. They might put your name on a "list" when you ask for one, but whoever shows up first gets the truck. You can walk in with a "#reservation" and they'll just say "Nope, don't have any trucks left" or give you something completely not what you "reserved".

A square raft with scaffolding strapped on just zigzagged past. It was used to inspect a rail bridge from below (which passed).

The raft is large—the very opposite of hydrodynamic—so one outboard motor is insufficient to steer it. Lots of spins, stops, turns, starts, … but in the end they reached the crane that hoisted scaffolding and raft out of the canal.

_The Evening Post_, 7 June 1924:
EATING HOUSES
INSPECTION BY CITY COUNCIL
REGULATIONS TO COME INTO
FORCE
In April, 1923, an Order-in-Council, issued by the Minister of Health, provided for the #inspection and registration of all premises used for the preparation of food to be consumed on the spot, and a further “Gazette” notice last November formally applied the new #regulations to Wellington, but there the matter stood for a time. From 1st July, however, the regulations will be enforced, the responsibility for their being applied being cast upon the local authority of each district—in the case of Wellington, the City Council.
There are in the city 117 eating houses and restaurants coming within the scope of the regulations, and as the inspection covers a very wide field the special inspector recently appointed by the council will be kept steadily busy on this work.…

The Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) has carried out a surprise Detailed Inspection on the Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link Project to ensure compliance with the approved Railway Scheme.

The inspection is carried out for the purpose of monitoring the progress of the project in order to comply with all of the requirements set by the stakeholders.

The debate about #OFSTED is already developing into a false opposition.... the choice is not between #inspection and no inspections, as many on the right seem to be claiming.

The question is how can inspection be made more humane... no #teacher I know thinks they should be unaccountable or un-inspected, but they have the absolute right to reject a brutal regime that is based on reducing #teaching to a set of data points to then discipline teachers...

The Railroad Workers United pinned the threat on rail industry cuts to inspection staff and the elimination of safety protocol. The East Palestine train was hurried, the non-profit said in a statement, and though a cause hasn’t been fully determined, it appears the train was not properly inspected.

Rail companies laid off more than 20,000 rail workers during a year period in 2018-2019, representing the biggest layoffs in rail since the Great Recession, and the nation’s rail force has dipped below 200,000 – the lowest level ever, and down from 1 million at its peak.

“They have cut the hell out of the workforce, and there are big plans to cut it further,” Kaminkow said. “Just because the rail companies are profitable doesn’t mean they’re healthy.”

On #control & #school #inspection & setting goals to check. What is actually ticked off … ?
Jenny Maria starts by comparing with the #walraffing by #Orwell in Down & out … If you have not experienced the reality of the people you evaluate, is there any way you can give a fair judgement or reference?
