New Branch Privilege Injection (CVE-2024-45332) attack bypasses Intel’s Spectre-BTI mitigations via branch predictor race conditions, leaking memory at 5.6KiB/s on patched systems. Affects CPUs from 9th gen onward. Fix: microcode updates.

#Intel's #ClearLinux Demonstrates Software Optimization Benefits On #AMD #EPYC 9005 Series
Clear #Linux easily took top spot. Clear was 6% faster than Ubuntu 25.04, which was running with the "performance" governor like the rest. Or compared to Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, the in-house Intel distribution was 23% faster. Ubuntu and other Linux distributions continue moving performance in right direction but Intel's Clear continues to deliver the fastest out-of-the-box x86_64 Linux.

@jbz >It was Intel grant money, Patterson happily admits, that paid for the Berkeley architects to invent RISC-V in the first place. Without closed source, proprietary Big Tech, there’s no open source, free-for-all Little Tech. Don’t listen to the techno-hippies who claim otherwise; that’s always been the case.
Perhaps. But it doesn't *have* to be that way :) There are alternatives to finance capital. And even it traces much of its sustenance to generous state backing, something China seems to have learned and that the USA seems to have forgotten (if the anemic CHIPS act in the US is anything to go by).
Hilarious to me that instead of investing in their company and people, Intel decided to spend $152,000,000,000 on stock buyback. Now they're scrambling and playing catchup and rotating through CEOs, as if they can undo 20 years of damage.

#Turbostat Utility Bumps 1024 #CPU Core Limit To 8192 Cores After #HPE Breaches It With a 1152 Core unnamed system.
We currently aren't aware of any server CPU configurations that can exceed this limit (in terms of physical cores), so this may be a custom or next-generation solution from #Intel or #AMD. The utility currently only supports #x86 processors, which seemingly rules out an Arm system from causing the issue.

#AMD #Ryzen9000 vs. #Intel #CoreUltra #ArrowLake On #Linux For Q1-2025 In ~400 Benchmarks
In cases where #AVX512 can be utilized, the Ryzen 9000 series is the definitive winner over the Intel Core Ultra Series 2 desktop processors. In some HPC applications the Core Ultra 9 285K with 24 physical cores does well in scenarios where SMP isn't leveraged.
Overall the #Zen5 based #Ryzen9 #9950X straight-up won 50% of the time with a first place finish.

#US #CHIPSAct Getting Scrapped By Trump Administration Now Looks Imminent; Over 80% of Staff Laid Off, Courtesy of #Elon’s #DOGE
The CHIPS Act, introduced under the Biden administration, was seen as the first step by the US to restore its status as the dominant #semiconductor country. The primary aim of the incentive was to bring chip production to the country, and with it, we saw the likes of #TSMC, #Intel, and many others opening up new facilities in the region.

Despite some goon sending this kinda pricey Ice Lake Xeon through international post, wrapped up in two thin layers of non/anti-static bubble wrap shoved into a Tyvek shipping bag (not a box!), it arrived yesterday and seems to be in decent shape after a trip from Australia to the middle of America.
So, what one does with a NOS (new old stock) bit of hardware which needs to be perfect in order to function, we inspect with macro photos and various image filtering methods to identify any potential flaws.
