Of course, #BlankSpots confirmed my preference for open rail systems without (mandatory) seat reservations like in 🇧🇪, 🇳🇱 or 🇩🇰. It was much more fun to travel spontaneously without worrying about trains selling out.
Even when booking your seats for your #Interrail Pass, the differences are huge:
- 🇬🇧🇨🇮: it's for free
- 🇸🇪🇩🇪: choose your seat in our own booking system
- 🇫🇷🇪🇦: book online, but it costs a lot and we often check before boarding
- 🇫🇮: call us
- 🇵🇹: come to the ticket desk

On the rails again… #Interrail #CrossBorderRail

Given that yesterday I checked Slovakia off my countries to travel to list, today I decided to Czech off another. So I’m on a Railjet on my way to Brno, Czechia.

Today’s trip plan: trainlog.me/public/trip/510123

That being said, this next week is going to be quite chaotic, with a number of last minute changes that may or may not happen, for reasons. Today’s plan has changed several times: I was originally thinking of going on the Semmering line to Graz, then I rerouted to Linz, and have settled, for the moment on Regensburg this evening.

I do have something to do this afternoon in Vienna, but on the prompting of @bovine3dom I decided to pop over to Brno and spend the morning enjoying the town on the trams….

On the rails again… #Interrail #CrossBorderRail

Today I am travelling to Vienna on a Railjet Express.

My route map: trainlog.me/public/trip/504095

There were no first class seats left on this train, so I decided to upgrade to Business Class, and have ended up with the Business Class Cuck Chair, number 51, which is at least less awkward than the middle chair on the weird threeway compartment that you can get further along in the train.

I almost didn’t make this train. In fact, I thought I hadn’t because I thought it was leaving ten mins earlier than it did. Also because DB InfraGO decided that first thing on a Tuesday was the best time to do maintenance on the Munich Stammstrecke, which made my already tight S-bahn connection untenable. As it was, I discovered last minute that I had the time wrong, and was able to board my train, anyway, amidst much panic. Kudos to @darkphoenix for navigating me through the Munich public transport network in these trying times.

It's still three trains to get from Budapest to Belgrade. First up, Nyugati to Szeged. If you try and plan the journey using the generic Budapest in the #Interrail planner it suggests you start from ,Kőbánya-Kispest a station in the eastern suburbs. Fortunately the service starts here, though.

Ansonsten wieder Sicherheitskontrollen für den AVE beim Umsteigen. 🙄😬
Also keine Messer über 6cm in den spanischen Schnellzügen. #Interrail

Replied to Moof!

@moof I've just booked Bordeaux - Hereford in a couple of weeks.

I paid 287€ for a four-day first class #Interrail pass in the most recent sale. I've so far paid 50€ in reservation fees.

Point-to-point tickets at today's prices would have cost 725€. I have to go through Crewe and I might not have enough time for a meal on the #TfW service, so it's not all rosy.

Ryanair one-way Limoges-Manchester currently showing at 174€.

How can it be that, even on a dynamically priced train, I am looking two months out, and it's significantly cheaper to buy an #Interrail pass than to pay full fare for just one leg?

I'm just looking to travel to Strasbourg in December, is that too much to ask? It's 281€ for just the outbound fare. A 4-day second class flex pass is 283€, and would cover the return, too....

...and it's 180€ to fly.

The next morning, #BlankSpots continues at Vigo-Guixar station. It's time for the Tren Celta! It connects 🇪🇦 Vigo with 🇵🇹 Porto and only runs twice a day. Consequently, there are lots of passengers, especially tourists. I wasn't able to make a mandatory seat reservation for my #Interrail pass online and I didn't want to risk the tickets selling out. As I wasn't close to any ticket office a few days ago, I had to buy a regular ticket which only cost €5.70. #BlankSpots

Beautiful bays are passing by on the train from Ferrol to A Coruña when the ticket control interrupts me. Apparently, I should have collected a free ticket for this Media Distancia with open seating. I ask the conductor which trains this applies to, as the #Interrail guide withholds this 'free ticket thing'. However, I don't receive a useful answer. I have boarded other Renfe trains with open seating before without any problems. Feeling somewhat puzzled, I finally eat my empanadas. #BlankSpots

#BlankSpots continues with two Régiolis Intercités sets taking me from Toulouse to Bayonne. I'm happy with my allocated first class seat, otherwise I am not a big fan of these trains. I can stretch my legs and have plenty of space to enjoy the view of the Pyrenees. Seat reservations cost 3.60 € if booked via #Interrail, but you don’t have to buy one here as there are some unreserved seats. The announcement system isn't working, but we still manage to arrive at the terminus orderly and safely. 😬
