When your free service (@BoxyBSD) kicks you out of bed on a Saturday morning.

The monitoring just alerted me about a potential abuse at my free hosting project and indeed - much traffic from a single user but luckily legit traffic.

Better safe than sorry.

First run done. All worked as expected including UEFI netboot. This is going to need some unofficial documentation done as it is lacking on the project site. Then others can automate. #OpenBSD

Getting this to work on an #IPv6 only network is going to need some work as rad.conf doesn't support dhcpd.conf options and it will be something that needs to be pulled in from ports (DHCPv6).

Alright I've got myself a 1GB RAM VPS for $12 for the year (a 4x increase over the Pi 😆). It's in London and everything for super low latency! I managed to get #alpinelinux installed through some hackery and migrate my blog and #snac instance to it.

One slightly weird thing I had is that inbound #ipv6 traffic on both SSH and HTTPS was returning a "connection reset by peer" for a while. It seems to be working now, but if some IPv6 folks can check https://cablespaghetti.dev loads properly over v6 for them now, it would put my mind at rest.
CablespaghettiCablespaghettiA random collection of thoughts, information and revelations which I saw fit to share with the world.

⚠️ Signups are currently deactivated!

We're now slightly below 1000 free VPS instances!

Within the last few weeks, coming with new locations around the world, we got more and more signups, where people can also test their setups across different geo locations @BoxyBSD.

Unfortunately, this also increases the required support which is really time consuming and only handled by @gyptazy. While everything is fully automated, support is another thing and I need a short break. Hope to open the signups quickly again.

PS: This project is completely free, not even any donation possibilities etc - just imagine a box would only cost 1$.

from my last boost:

"It's great that the EU is considering it's digital sovereignty, but I'd rather we had distributed rather than centralised resources. We need legislation to ensure that IPv4 is phased out and IPv6 support by our hosting and internet providers is mandatory. Because IP address scarcity is one of the things standing in the way for new hosting providers and digital innovation."

Not really sure what to use for search now. DDG doesn't support IPv6 as I discovered last week while working on an #IPv6 only network. Neither does #Mojeek (and their language support is limited to ascii-only languages - even entering "français" it will ask "did you mean francais?" (same for umlauts) and Russian and Ukrainian aren't indexed at all).

Google and Bing are the only ones I know with IPv6 support.

We seem to be getting driven off the web, folks.

Some of you might know it already, some of you have heard it and well, I cannot hide it anymore: I've become a father. My son Leonhard was born in October last year and my life has been 720 degree rotated multiple times since then.

This means a lot of changes and is also the reason why I stepped down as a working group co-chair from the RIPE #IPv6 working group.

So there it is - I am officially old.

Brill: In the old days, we actually had to tap a wire into your phone line. Now with calls bouncing off satellites, they snatch'em right out of the air.

Brill: They've infected everything. They get into your bank statements, computer files, email, listen to your phone calls... Every wire, every airwave. The more technology used, the easier it is for them to keep tabs on you.

IMDbEnemy of the State (1998) - Quotes - IMDbEnemy of the State: Directed by Tony Scott. With Will Smith, Gene Hackman, Jon Voight, Lisa Bonet. A lawyer becomes targeted by a corrupt politician and his N.S.A. goons when he accidentally receives key evidence to a politically motivated crime.

FreeBSD 14.3 got a greatly improved support for Intel WiFi hardware (iwlwifi driver).

Finally, the AX210 (802.11ac) wifi card in my ThinkPad T480 works perfectly fine without having to rely on the wifibox workarround anymore.

IPv4 works perfectly fine
IPv6 work perfectly fine
Standby and resume woks
Speeds are phenomenal

Also the WiFi configuration is rather easy:

In /etc/rc.conf:
wlans_iwlwifi0="wlan0"
ifconfig_wlan0="WPA SYNCDHCP"
create_args_wlan0="wlanmode sta regdomain ETSI country DE"
ifconfig_wlan0_ipv6="inet6 accept_rtadv"

In /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf:
ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant
eapol_version=2
ap_scan=1
fast_reauth=1

network={
ssid="Hoda-IOT"
scan_ssid=0
psk="my-secure-wifi-key"
priority=10
}

Amazing progress for FreeBSD on laptops :-) I really like it!

#freebsd#bsd#wifi

I spent some time earlier in the week with my laptop running on #IPv6 only while running some tests.

Very interesting to note which websites are still reachable.

✅ chaos.social
✅ codeberg.org
❌ sr.ht
✅ gitlab.org
❌ github.com
✅ debian.org
❌ abc.net.au
✅ bbc.co.uk

I was surprised that #SourceHut failed, as IPv6 support was added a while back, so I did some digging (literally - I used dig).

sr.ht is missing IPv6 glue records. Important, but easy to overlook if you run your own nameservers.

How do you get rid of the "we need to save addresses" attitude?

If did an addressing concept with a /48 per location with > 50% spare for more locations.

People are now planning with /60, /56, /52 per location because we must save addresses.
