Theories include that people are naming their children after the directing duo the Coen brothers, or that it’s a co-opting by Christians of Jewish traditions. Says Benyamin: “I think it’s clever to give pets human names. We have chickens and each one is named after an NPR broadcaster. We have Terry Gross, Yuki Noguchi, Nina Totenberg and so on. We’re actually on our third Melissa Block. The first two, alas, are in chicken heaven now.” Mira replies: “And they all, of course, have your last name.” Benyamin: “Yes, yes. Thomas D. Embree 🇨🇦<p>I don't understand the unfortunate tolerance of anti-Semitism on the left. I strongly support the rights of Jewish and Palestinian peoples, but I strongly oppose the genocidal policies of the Israeli government (which obviously doesn't represent the Jewish people).</p><p>Opposing the Israeli government shouldn't mean opposing Judaism. Serge from Babka<p>This post is for non-Jews, as it will be obvious to Jews.</p><p>The issue of whether one is Zionist or not as a Jew is deeply personal. But the fact is that no one would accept that a minority viewpoint of a mere 15% be given priority over the rest for any other group.</p><p>For gentiles who use social pressure, ostracization or even discrimination to promote anti-Zionism, this is nothing less than an expression of forced assimilation. As we Jews have experienced many attempts at forced assimilation in our history.</p><p>Jewish independence and resiliency is what they find offensive, and thus they construct "socially acceptable" ways to be Jewish.</p><p>The modern version of this began with Napoleon.
