Varvara Stepanova, flyer for "The Death of Tarelkin", 1922.

Often mentioned only alongside her husband, Alexander Rodchenko, Stepanova was an accomplished artist in her own right. Along with this flyer, she also designed the sets for the production. While it’s not known if she designed the costumes for this production, the image is very similar to the geometric clothing she created for other plays.

Brown paper with rough edges. Printed on the paper is a black figure rendered in geometric shapes and striped clothing. Cyrillic lettering surrounds the figure.

My first encounter with collage cut lettering. Four exercises from yesterday’s workshop with Francis Chouquet. A small exclusive group of people having a great time with knives, glue and coloured papers. We were encouraged to work intuitively without designing or planning. The purpose was to create organic and flowing letters. With too much perfection, the work looses its spontaneity and dies. And I completely relate to that. In my work in general, I always embrace intuition and spontaneity, the thing called automatic drawing/painting etc.

Back in the Rijksmuseum Research Library (aka Cuypersbibliotheek) to have another look at the lettering book with alphabets by J. Weenink, 1843. Manuscript, no printed copy of it known. Weenink (1797-1879) was an Amsterdam letter- and decorative painter. Coll. Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.

@matratype Just found this unboxing a few things at home.

It's a poster based on Pieter Snijders' Shaded Letters book, which no longer appears to be for sale on his site at https://www.bold-statements.com/.

Poster with a 5 x 7 array of words presented with the lettering effect they represent, eg 'DROP' with a drop shade, 'CONVEX' with a convex body to the letters, etc.

Following on the page from 18., some new colors have entered the mix.

My question now is, if acrylic paint is one step away from being awkward ink, is a nib therefore the most excellent small round brush? Is a nib the best painting tool for details? Will I make a second pen set reserved for oil paints?
