#Whales can live way longer than scientists had thought, with potential #lifespans as much as double previous estimates
Southern #rightwhales have lifespans that reach well past 100yr, and 10% may live past 130 years. Some of these whales may live to 150. This #lifespan is almost double the 70-80 years they are conventionally believed to live.
North Atlantic right whales thought to have lifespan of about 70yr. But average only 22 years, and they rarely live past 50.

Selfish plutocrats
Wish they'd live 'til end of time.
Reckless, seems they will.

Ben Franklin said (in 1780): "I have sometimes almost wished it had been my destiny to be born two or three centuries hence. For invention and improvement are prolific, and progress in them seems to be accelerating. What prodigious improvements may we not expect in a few years?"

I sometimes feel as if the world's tech giant billionaires think this same, but are lulled by their riches into a false belief that they can bend space and time to bring that future into the present, against the advice of Star Trek, which many times reminds us that when knowledge outpaces wisdom, disaster looms.

We can rush tech, but wisdom not so much. By rushing, we seem probably to be ending humanity's hope of having any future whatsoever. Collapse of civilization, quite possibly extinction, looms. Though this means those reckless, impatient, spoiled billionaires will not have missed out on seeing future human inventions. So... mission accomplished? They have, after all, lived to see it all.

_The Evening Post_, 21 Mar 1924:
THE NEWER EDUCATION
HOW TO LIVE LONGER
Some interesting remarks upon the newer education and the present-day tendency towards luxury-living were made by Dr. W. J. #Mayo….
One gained the impression that though there was no great wealth in New Zealand there was great general prosperity, which was much better. When one became possessed of more money, one desired more luxury. That was one of the great problems of to-day, and he went on to show how indulgence in luxury was affecting the span of life, and setting down in indelible ink the death-rate of thousands of people.
He then showed what the medical profession had done to prolong life, stamping out the worst diseases. He stressed the value of a good water supply. Every large town in the United States of America had its up-to-date water supply, and that was what brought about Prohibition. It unconsciously reduced the consumption of alcohol and fermented drinks by 40 per cent.… Milk was now pasteurised, so that children could be brought up safely, and New Zealand now had the smallest infant mortality in the world.…

I'm trying to sign up for men's #cooking #lessons here in #Japan to placate my busy #Japanese wife. While she was away, I made this cheese omelette; beginner's luck! A #community center has me on a waiting list, or I could spill for more upscale lessons. It is astonishing and unJapanese that single-person #households are approaching 40%. #Single #men of all ages have a poor #diet, which exacerbates the #lifespan gap with #women. #Loneliness is also a #health hazard. Many men are #widowed, never #married, or their #wives #divorce them, often after the children become independent and the husband is useless around the house after a busy career. Single men, or married men interested in cooking or helping their wives, possibly fearing their wives' pent-up anger, can find #companionship as well as #survival #skills in cooking lessons. Men's classes start from zero; women #cook and #socialize.

It is the BEST THING EVER to see someone investigate a research question you've always had, but do it better than you could've ever done.

Check out Melanie Weireich and Adrian Simpson's #ICPhS2023 paper, "Changes in parents' phonetic parameters during the first year of a child's life: A comparative study of German and Swedish"

Fascinating correlations, and lack thereof, between femininity self-rating of fathers and mothers, and their f0 production over time.

*At best, Brenner says, scientists can develop therapies that maintain the #health of #older people and help keep them out of the #hospital—an increasingly important goal as the average age in the #UnitedStates and elsewhere keeps climbing. (...) But believing we can rewrite the operating manual for #lifespan itself, Brenner told me, is like “believing in the tooth fairy.”*

Is it too late for an #introduction for my first toot?!

I'm Jo, a postdoc in the Social Decision Neuroscience Lab (led by @thepsychologist) @thechbh Uni of Birmingham, UK.

I use techniques from #cognitiveneuroscience #socialneuroscience like #fMRI and #computational #modelling to understand #prosocial #decision-making and #kindness plus how these choices differ with #age across the #lifespan

Think that's enough hashtags for now, I can't believe there are still characters left!
