A group of 57 #constitutional #scholars and #retired #federal and #state #judges wrote a letter to the leaders of #Congress on Wednesday urging them to establish #term #limits for U.S. #SupremeCourt justices, proposing guardrails that they said are "urgently needed at a time of plummeting confidence" in the nation's highest court. Earth exceeds safe limits: First Planetary Health Check issues red alert
“When we look at the trends of Earth’s health indicators, we see that soon the majority of them will be in the high-risk zone. We need to reverse this trend. We know that all Planetary Boundary processes act together and each one needs protection to protect the whole system.”

One of the generic problems is that "effectively" only applies to one perspective, excluding all others. This has become a norm, across many parts of society.
Like nonstop auto playing videos of 99% worthless content, jacking up worthless searches by creating autosearching #AI bots that inhabit every possible onramp device/interface is just not energetically sustainable.
So maybe not having the learning curve + novelty bubble multiplied by 8 billion would be prudent?
I'd say that most things that survive (locally) for long periods of time make the same #evolutionary adjustment.
High efficiency is not #sustainable, unless periodic catastrophic crashes (in number) are tolerable.
OTOH, most systems do not come to this accord on their own, the environment in which it lives constrains optimal #efficiency attainable.
Sheldon Whitehouse here
with big news, team:
President Biden and Vice President Harris endorsed #sweeping #reforms to the Supreme Court, including 18-year #term #limits for justices and an #enforceable #code of #ethics.
I've been leading the way on reforming the Supreme Court for many years.
This has been a long, and at times lonely, fight. ️But we've got momentum now.
My SCERT Act,
which would create real ethical guardrails at the Supreme Court,
is through committee and ready for a floor vote.
AND I have the Supreme Court Biennial Appointments and Term Limits Act
to establish eighteen-year term limits for justices.
Will you chip in today to support my re-election campaign
so I can keep building on our momentum to clean up the mess at the Court That Dark Money Built?

Biden to announce plans to reform US supreme court – report
The US president also will seek constitutional amendment to limit immunity for presidents and various officeholders
Joe Biden will announce plans to reform the US supreme court on Monday, Politico reported,
citing two people familiar with the matter,
adding that the US president was likely to back #term #limits for justices and an enforceable #code #of #ethics.
Mr. Biden said earlier this week during an Oval Office address that he would call for reform of the court.
He is also expected to seek a #constitutional #amendment to limit #immunity for presidents and some other officeholders, in the aftermath of a July supreme court ruling that presidents have broad immunity from prosecution.
Biden will make the announcement in Texas on Monday and the specific proposals could change, the report added.
Justice Elena #Kagan on Thursday became the first member of the supreme court to call publicly for beefing up its new ethics code by adding a way to #enforce it.
“The thing that can be criticized is, you know, rules usually have enforcement mechanisms attached to them, and this one
– this set of rules
– does not,” Kagan said at an annual judicial conference held by the ninth circuit.
More than 150 judges, attorneys, court personnel and others attended.
The court had been considering adopting an ethics code for several years,
but the effort took on added urgency after it was reported last year that Justice Clarence #Thomas did not disclose luxury trips he accepted from a major Republican donor.
Public #confidence in the court has slipped sharply in recent years.
In June, a survey for the Associated Press-Norc Center for Public Affairs Research found that
four in 10 US adults have hardly any confidence in the justices
and 70% believe they are more likely to be guided by their own ideology rather than serving as neutral arbiters.

Trump's entire #Project2025 Policy Agenda is huge
--over 900 pages as I understand it
--but given the nature of this website, I'm going to restrict myself to discussing the #healthcare policy section, which is thankfully "only" 54 pages long.
Since there's so much to wade through here, I'll be breaking this into several individual posts.
First up, according to Edwin Park, Research Professor at the Georgetown University McCourt School of Public Policy’s Center for Children and Families,
here's how Project 2025 would impact #MEDICAID:
• It would convert federal Medicaid funding into #BLOCK #GRANTS (a set amount of money which would remain the same regardless of increased healthcare cost growth, enrollment growth, unexpected additional costs from recessions, disasters, another global pandemic, etc.
• It would require #states to pay a much larger share of Medicaid costs
• It would eliminate states ability to use provider #taxes, which states use to pay part of their share
• This in turn would prevent states from being able to access even the already-reduced #federal #revenue
• It would eliminate many Medicaid protections & requirements, including adding coverage time #limits and lifetime benefit #caps
• It would allow states to increase #premiums & cost sharing for enrollees and add them to #children and pregnant women
• It would allow states to drop coverage of #nursing home care and long-term services
• States would no longer have to coverage non-elderly non-#disabled parents
• It would add more red tape & make it more #difficult for people to apply for, enroll in and renew their coverage
• It would let states add work reporting #requirements, which have proven to be a disaster in the handful of states that it's been allowed for to date
• It would push for Medicaid #vouchers for less affordable & far less comprehensive private coverage
• It would remove most federal #oversight of state Medicaid programs...except for #abortion & reproductive healthcare, where it would crack down with #draconian federal requirements including prohibiting Planned Parenthood from receiving federal funding, prohibiting coverage of travel to get an abortion and eliminating Medicaid funding for states which require abortion coverage in private policies*
*Note: As of 2022, that included California, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, New York, Oregon and Washington.
Overall, Park estimates that Project 2025 would slash federal Medicaid funding by more than 50% over the next decade.

How did we ever survive the 140 character limit for posts? It was great when it was raised to 280, and now it feels like 500 is not enough.

I have decided, as a #selfhost with just two other people on my instance, that I'm going to limit threads.net following the example of @Jerry quoted below. I didn't know that you can “unlimit” specific accounts! This is an interesting option.
For other admins who might not be familiar, I am discovering this too for the first time:
When you ‘Limit' a domain (under Federation—>Add new domain block) and then click on that domain in the list it brings you to the screen in the first picture.
You can then see which accounts have been organically “stored" (i think of it more like being "noticed”) by the server. I’m excited that @stonekettle is there! I miss him!
So I am going to click on his account and use “undo limit” to remove the limit on his account specifically so that I can boost and reply to his stuff.

Former justice Stephen Breyer signals support for supreme court term limits
Former US supreme court justice Stephen #Breyer signaled his support for #term #limits in the country’s highest court following his retirement in 2022.
In a new interview on Sunday with NBC’s Meet the Press, 85-year-old Breyer said: “I don’t think that’s harmful,” adding: “If you had long terms, for example, they’d have to be long. Why long? Because I don’t think you want someone who’s appointed to the supreme court to be thinking about his next job.”
“And so, a 20-year term? I don’t know. 18? Long-term? Fine.” Breyer continued. “I don’t think that would be harmful. I think it would have helped in my case. It would have avoided, for me, going through difficult decisions when you retire. What’s the right time?” the liberal justice said.
