Undiscovered Scotland<p>The less than obvious remains of the Old Fort, or Fort William, after which the town visible in the background is named. The fort was built in 1690 on the site of a wooden Cromwellian citadel. Undiscovered Scotland<p>Inverlochy Castle near Fort William. Built from around 1280 it was overtaken by history not once, but twice: first by a Cromwellian citadel built in 1654 and then by a Scots baronial style Inverlochy Castle built not far away in 1863. Undiscovered Scotland<p>The superbly remote Loch Arkaig in Lochaber, said to be the hiding place of a hoard of gold coins landed by the French at Loch nan Uamh in late April 1746 in support of the (by then already failed) Jacobite rising. Undiscovered Scotland<p>Glen Roy's "parallel roads", north of Roybridge in Lochaber. Long held in folklore to be hunting paths used by the Celtic warrior Fingal, they actually mark different shore lines of a vast ancient loch created by glacial ice.
