Today in Labor History March 29, 1797: William Godwin married Mary Wollstonecraft. Godwin was an English journalist, philosopher and novelist. And one of the first modern proponents of anarchism. His most famous books are “An Enquiry Concerning Political Justice” and “Things as They Are; or, The Adventures of Caleb Williams,” a mystery novel that attacks aristocratic privilege. Wollstonecraft was a British writer, philosopher, and advocate of women's rights, and is regarded by many as one of the founding feminist philosophers. Her most famous book was “A Vindication of the Rights of Woman” (1792). She died 11 days after giving birth to her second daughter, Mary Shelley, author of Frankenstein.

St Pancras Old Church, Somers Town, London, August 2023.

Sitting between the old route of the buried River Fleet and the railway line into St Pancras Station, there has been a church on this site since Anglo-Saxon times.

People buried in the grounds include composer Johann Christian Bach (son of Johann Sebastian Bach), architect John Soane, and feminist Mary Wollstonecraft (mother of author Mary Shelley) - although she is now buried elsewhere.

Also of note is a collection of gravestones assembled by author Thomas Hardy (*Tess of the d*'*Urbervilles*) from when he was working as an architect during a time when part of the churchyard was being resumed to enable extra railway lines to run into St Pancras Station.

I remember reading a Room on One's Own from Virginia Woolf in 2017 for the first time (and in English!!) and feeling absolutely bewildered. I was frantically taking notes and everything - I had never done that about a book, even for classes. It was the summer of my first year of uni, right after came a vindication for the rights of women. #feminism #feminist #virginiawoolf #english #englishliterature #essays #woolf #marywollstonecraft #books #bookstodon

In her A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792), she argued that women are not naturally inferior to men, but only appeared to be because they lacked education.
