(Basic tutorial, language definition, best IDE / package management system?)</p><p>My specific targets are <br>(1) large vectorized computations, preferably (1a) automatically GPU'd when possible and <br>(2) hardware control of (2a) arduino devices (access as sending characters over a serial port is fine) and (2b) online (at speed) video processing and storage, including camera hardware signaling.</p><p>Alternatively to (2), I have considered <a href="https://neuromatch.social/tags/BonsaiRx" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>BonsaiRx</span></a>. Really good would be having a way of linking Julia with BonsaiRx (which does video well, but not the other task-control stuff).</p>

I used to prefer <a href="https://neuromatch.social/tags/Python" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Python</span></a> but last time I tried to install it to get some spike sorting code to run I had to admit that all the problems with incompatible versions made it almost not worth it.</p><p>The only other alternative I've seen people use would be R, and these people usually claim that it can do anything that Python (or Matlab) does, but in reality I've never seen them use it for anything else than plot graphs and do stats. So I don't know if it can really be a replacement.</p><p>I also tried Octave a long time ago, it was not as good as Matlab but maybe it has improved now? I don't know how they deal with updates and toolboxes..</p><p>So I'm also interested to see what alternatives do people use for <a href="https://neuromatch.social/tags/Neuroscience" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Neuroscience</span></a> analyses!</p>

I learned MATLAB in college the late 2000s, but it was proprietary and expensive so I never used it.</p><p>STEM students should definitely be learning Python instead of MATLAB. And I don't mean proving who you are or that a file hasn't been altered. </p><p>I mean an *authentic* set of rules. Something that a user feels isn't just a bunch of red tape they can ignore.</p><p>A large subset of users (especially <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/neurodivergent" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>neurodivergent</span></a> ones) only feel morally compelled by a good reason, not just the existence of rule.</p><p>Example: A file transfer system intended to prevent malicious code from being transferred.</p><p>You can only put certain filetypes through it, determined by file extension (which you are not allowed to alter). These extensions are things like .txt, .png, .xml, .doc and a bunch of common "data only" ones. </p><p>(There are already multiple problems here, since these files can already contain malicious code and why would a bad actor obey the file extension rule, but ignore all that. The rule so far is *ineffective* but not *illogical*.)</p><p>Files that are allowed also include .pl (<a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/Perl" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Perl</span></a>), .m (<a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/matlab" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>matlab</span></a>) and .js (<a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/javascript" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>javascript</span></a>).
