Sini Tuulia<p>Oh heck, I can't believe it worked! One of the tomes (an old Victorian millinery manual) suggested using newspaper tissue paper to help turn edges or sew sequins or lace onto tulle or veiling... And I went "hmm" and then tried if I could put a lattice and bead design on soft tulle... And holy shit.</p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/Millinery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Millinery</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/Sewing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Sewing</span></a></p>
Sini Tuulia<p>Anyway, millinery progress photos, two are selfies. At first we have what is technically a hat! Then I made some trim by putting this horrendously loud organza ribbon on this black satin ribbon. And then I put a bunch of tulle and the combined ribbon on hat.<br>It's not bad, just kind of in just one direction, so I'll likely put more stuff on it.</p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/Millinery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Millinery</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/HistoryBounding" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HistoryBounding</span></a></p>
Sini Tuulia<p>And, in little hat: Yesterday put on the brim wire and petersham. You could do this by machine if you were willing to get annoyed at the million clips and/or pins you'd need, but I just did it by hand.</p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/Millinery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Millinery</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/SewingWithCats" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SewingWithCats</span></a></p>
Sini Tuulia<p>A lot of the times I walk past my stack of hats I both yearn for one of those old fashioned hat stands... And think that I should really wear Second Largest Hat more. It's rather large!<br>The second photo is from the making of, where I sewed on pieces of embroidered lace by hand. There's a bit of veiling on top of it I've since changed my mind about, but I haven't changed it because I don't wear it!</p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/Millinery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Millinery</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/HistoryBounding" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HistoryBounding</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/Hats" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Hats</span></a></p>
Sini Tuulia<p>Today, in <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/OldManuals" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OldManuals</span></a> and <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/Millinery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Millinery</span></a>: <br>"There was a time in the millinery business when the trimmer was expected to construct as well as trim each individual frame, they being held, when sold at all, at exorbitant prices and at that only the most common ones being obtainable. That time has passed, as they can now be purchased in any desirable shape at but little in advance of the price of making and this with a vast saving of time and patience.</p><p>It is necessary, however, that the woman be familiar with at least the making of the most common frame or what is known as the flat frame, in order that she may alter or repair a hat in an intelligent manner."</p><p><a href="https://archive.org/details/homemillinerycou00nati/page/22/mode/2up?view=theater" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">archive.org/details/homemillin</span><span class="invisible">erycou00nati/page/22/mode/2up?view=theater</span></a></p>
Sini Tuulia<p>The Wikipedia article for aigrette is really really short and has nothing about the historical bird murder. If I dig up the paragraph, does a Victorian book work as a citation? Does anyone want to mention that on there? <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aigrette" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aigrette</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p><p>(For reasons of avoiding being lost in eleven thousand rabbit holes I am not allowing myself to edit wikipedia pages.)</p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/Wikipedia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Wikipedia</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/Millinery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Millinery</span></a></p>
Sini Tuulia<p>Leafing through a dozen different old <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/Millinery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Millinery</span></a> manuals from the 1890s and the 1910s (and one from 1901) and they had all kinds of things to say. Paraphrased:</p><p>"It's interesting how a machine sewer in New York gets paid so much more than a woman doing the plaiting by hand in distant China."<br>"Make a little knot just behind the needle when sewing with doubled up thread, to prevent twisting."<br>"The selection of ready made hat bases is vast, but it would do to know how to do this yourself, anyway."</p>
Sini Tuulia<p>Last night, instead of sleeping, I was thinking about hats. The start of the 1900s, the decade not the century, is one of those hat eras where pretty much anything goes and I'm sure I have the dregs of some hatting supplies in a box on the shelf... I know for sure I have modern buckram and hat wire! And while I absolutely do not need another hat, I do quite like making them. I mean, it's horrible and difficult, but also fun? Just hat dreams 👒✨ </p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/Millinery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Millinery</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/HistoryBounding" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HistoryBounding</span></a></p>
TAV Creations<p>This dress has some history. I’ll tell the full story slowly here. For now, it’s two most recent appearances- National Women’s show <a href="https://ottawa.place/tags/ottawa" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ottawa</span></a> in 2021 ( <a href="https://ottawa.place/tags/stillMasking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>stillMasking</span></a>), and the last Halloween party we attended in 2019 as a ghost bride. <br><a href="https://ottawa.place/tags/steampunk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>steampunk</span></a> <a href="https://ottawa.place/tags/oldWest" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>oldWest</span></a> <a href="https://ottawa.place/tags/pastel" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>pastel</span></a> <a href="https://ottawa.place/tags/laceAndSatin" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>laceAndSatin</span></a> <a href="https://ottawa.place/tags/millinery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>millinery</span></a> <a href="https://ottawa.place/tags/TAVCreations" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>TAVCreations</span></a> <a href="https://ottawa.place/tags/ottawaDesigner" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ottawaDesigner</span></a> <a href="https://ottawa.place/tags/bridal" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bridal</span></a> <a href="https://ottawa.place/tags/themeWedding" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>themeWedding</span></a> <a href="https://ottawa.place/tags/halloweenCostume" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>halloweenCostume</span></a> <a href="https://ottawa.place/tags/teamcouture" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>teamcouture</span></a> <a href="https://ottawa.place/tags/sewing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sewing</span></a> <a href="https://ottawa.place/tags/hatmaking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>hatmaking</span></a> <a href="https://ottawa.place/tags/bespoke" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bespoke</span></a></p>
Affienia<p>Question for the crafty, ideally those with millinery experience. I have an old straw(?) hat. Got it second hand so no details on what it’s made of. It’s pink but it’s sooooooo faded. I want to re-dye it but I’m worried that submerging it will make it lose its shape. I considered painting the dye on but I’d still need to rinse it so I don’t end up with a bright pink forehead.<br>Any tips on how to do this? Boost appreciated.<br><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/millinery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>millinery</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/DyingPlantFibres" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DyingPlantFibres</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/StrawHats" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>StrawHats</span></a></p>

Sini Tuulia<p>If I may, might I direct your attention to my favourite hat I ever made!<br>It is absolutely enormous and fits on top of some truly chunky wigs and is wider than my actual shoulders in some places!</p><p>The construction is on top of a repurposed sinamay base, steamed and remoulded, covered in velvet and just a bunch of different veiling and crin tube to simulate the movement of feathers sans feathers!</p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/Millinery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Millinery</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/HistoryBounding" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HistoryBounding</span></a></p>

Sini Tuulia<p>I have located TWO photos of making the hat!</p><p>I sewed it pretty much by hand because it was quite unwieldy due to its size. There's a sinamay hat base I steamed into a new shape under all the velvet, which I just draped on and pleated down into pleasant little patterns. The flat crin tubing is simulating feathers and moves in a dainty way when walking, it's nice.</p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/Millinery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Millinery</span></a></p>
Sini Tuulia<p>The thing about pseudo-Victorian <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/millinery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>millinery</span></a> is that you can make just The Skrunkliest, most terrible, shoddiest hat imaginable. And nobody can tell because the next step is covering it in just so much other shit.</p>
Sini Tuulia<p>I have finished <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/TheImogenHat" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>TheImogenHat</span></a>! <br>Please gaze upon this low quality gif I quickly took right before the sun fully set for the day. Proper documentation perhaps later.</p><p>It ended up being more minimalist than I expected, the top is mostly just swathed in black netting - with two bows of gold dotted veiling and an actual veil of dotted black veiling. Yay veil!</p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/Millinery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Millinery</span></a> gif, selfie (kinda)</p>
Sini Tuulia<p>The decorating. It begins!</p><p>I think a person with normal fashion sense would stop right about here, but having pinned this hella expensive lace in place I think I shall next look at filling the rest of the hat with a profusion of other things. Pour one out for me, as I try to keep three cats away from all the silk flowers</p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/Millinery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Millinery</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/TheImogenHat" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>TheImogenHat</span></a></p>
Sini Tuulia<p>With a great deal of effort and some minor injuries I have created... a little bowl</p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/Millinery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Millinery</span></a> is not very rewarding at this stage. 😂 And I have concluded that I do not care for modern buckram, it vaguely does the same things as old school buckram but is a lot more unpleasant to sew!</p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/TheImogenHat" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>TheImogenHat</span></a></p>
Sini Tuulia<p>Started up a new <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/Millinery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Millinery</span></a> project today. It's the <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/ImogenHat" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ImogenHat</span></a> pattern from Elsewhen Millinery and naturally despite using the pattern pieces I've already gone off the instructions. I'm apparently sewing it by hand because trying to wrangle the pieces on the machine irks me and my brim wire is metal.</p><p>I'm using modern buckram (i think I prefer the historical kind) for the first time and my fabric is this lovely wool suiting remnant I picked up because it was pretty and I sure hope it's the right weight to eventually wear. We shall see, perhaps!</p>
