Anyone who expects me to install yet another app for their garbage can kindly fuck off!

  • Fix your shit and give me a compelling reason to even consider making an account in the first place.

I won't but seeing folks who actually take privacy serious and thus have their #cameras removed from their #Android device struggle makes me fucking angry.

Personally, I wished @delta / #deltaChat had a plugin for like @thunderbird / #Thunderbird so that it can be used as #Chat in it and sort the inbox. Would make it the superior solution for #corporations that already have #eMail #Archival setup for legal compliance…

Infosec.SpaceKevin Karhan :verified: (@kkarhan@infosec.space)One thing that really pisses me off personally is the #regression in terms of #Messenger #Apps. My personal distaste and dislike for #proprietary, #SingleVendor & #SingleProvider #services like #Signal [¹](https://infosec.space/@kkarhan/114234551915193036) [²](https://infosec.space/@kkarhan/114935952643402592), #Telegram, #Discord [³](https://infosec.space/@kkarhan/114865723904157014), #WhatsApp [⁴](https://infosec.space/@kkarhan/114873895410403238), #Slack, #MicrosoftTeams, etc. aside: - *WHY* is there no #CrossProvider #Messenger to handle that shite? - *WHY* does everyone of these shitty providers think people want to download their #bloated #WebApp that takes up triple digit Megabytes if not entire Gigabytes and will gobble up all the #RAM and #CPU each of them can?? This problem ain't new and *already got [solved for corporate social media](https://infosec.space/@kkarhan/114862619013462466) ages ago!* (Not to mention actually good messengers!) - And no, [bridges](https://toots.ch/@dalai/114862754556459439) *[don't](https://swecyb.com/@troed/114862774972645542) count*! - I mean `API 0` - [style](https://digipres.club/@foone/112685423773959519) access because obviously [none of the platforms](https://digipres.club/@foone/112685414638522984) will *allow, endorse or support such an endeavour* and [*actively fight the developers and users*](https://digipres.club/@foone/112685441496803574) ! So yeah, consider this a call for a @gajim@fosstodon.org / #Gajim or @pidgin@fosstodon.org / #Pidgin *for garbage platforms!* - Cuz back in the day we had *way worse messengers* yet people actually made #AIM, #ICQ, #MSN, #QQ, #IRC & #XMPP work just fine from one single *"phat" client*! - Can we please get that back? #api0 #Enshittification

My reservations and criticism re: #Signal are not just valid, but the reality is even worse than I thought:

  • The fact that @signalapp requires not only their shitty #Android #App, and a #PhoneNumber but literally won't allow people to use their shitty #Desktop-App unless they have an Android device with a camera pointed at it makes it utterly unuseable for certain users who don't have a fucking #camera in their Android

Seriously, do they expect folks to deal woth that shit? It's already worse in terms of #UX than #telgram and #discord and that too makes #XMPP+#OMEMO clients like @monocles / #monoclesChat & @gajim / #gajim easier and faster to onboard #TechIlliterates onto.

  • Whichever asshole decided that a replacement for #SMS should mandate #PII like a #PhoneNumber & not be natively cross-platform should be banned from doing any #tech in their life. Trying to circumvent this shit and helping folks with it makes me so fucking angry that I'm now explicitly refusing to support it!

FIX THAT SHIT, @Mer__edith, and if it means you need to kick some devs in their crouch then consider this a necessary "investment"

@debby @monocles @Stuxhost well, @delta / #deltaChat is not using #XMPP+#OMEMO (unlike #monoclesChat & #gajim) but #PGP/MIME on regular #eMail, which makes it way easier to setup in organizations as "nit yet another server needed" and also easier to comply with mandatory #archival laws in #business use-cases.

@ueeu I think crucial parts is looking at it's components, dependencies, size and for apps permissions.

#ReproduceableBuilds for example are important, so the actually released source code is what people actually get served as basis.

Plus in terms of #security, choose *real #E2EE with #SelfCustody of all the #Keys!

Getting started with XMPP/Jabber and PGP for federated, encrypted messaging

This is a short thread where I explain how I started using the XMPP protocol and PGP encryption for secure messaging. I am not a security expert, but I am a mathematician and I am confortable with the Linux command line. This guide is for people who want to use PGP for secure messaging easily. You will need to be okay with typing commands into the Linux command line in order to do this, but I will tell you exactly what to enter.

Part 1: XMPP

Mastodon is like email, but for social media. You sign up for an account with a server, and then you can talk with any other accounts that are signed up on other servers, as long as your servers are getting along. (No one wants emails from the sketchy spam server, and we want to be able to choose between Yahoo, Gmail, etc.) XMPP (a.k.a. Jabber) is the same thing for text messaging.

Just like signing up for an email/Mastodon account, you need to sign up for an account. You can find a list of servers at list.jabber.at/ and will probably at least need to provide an email addess when making an account.

Once you have made an account, you need a client. On Linux, I've been having a good time using Dino (dino.im/). You can then enter your account name and password to log into your XMPP account and start chatting! There are both public rooms and you can also message directly with your friends.

@mastodonmigration Obligatory reminder that #Signal relies on a centralized and proprietary server, and does not belong here.

Users of #WhatsApp #Telegram #Discord #Signal and #Threema etc should use #XMPP instead, which is #FreeSoftware and federated.

Users - check out #Quicksy (Android and iOS), #Prav, #Conversations, #Cheogram, #MonoclesChat, #Gajim, #Movim, #Monal...

Self-hosters, check out #Snikket.

@rysiek @kkarhan @agturcz An awful lot of people say they've used #XMPP "a while back". But they're often unaware of the best of XMPP, and have an unfairly negative view of it.

Did you happen to try...

...#Snikket for hosting?
snikket.org

...apps like #Quicksy and #Prav which use phone numbers for easy onboarding, same as #Signal #WhatsApp or #Telegram?
quicksy.im
prav.app

...featureful clients like #Cheogram #MonoclesChat #Gajim #Movim etc?

@moh_kohn except @signalapp too is a #centralized, #SingleVendir & #SingleProvider solution that fully falls under #CliudAct and thus CANNOT comply with #GDPR & #BDSG as a matter of principle since this digital rquivalent of #ExtraordinaryRendition is inherently incompatible!

@monocles / #monoclesChat, @gajim / #gajim & @delta / #deltaChat, @thunderbird / #Thunderbird do support that!

@ai6yr people need to fucking learn proper #InfoSec, #OpSec, #CkmSec & #ITsec and that means learning to proper use #XMPP+#OMEMO & #PGP/MIME.

@tails_live / @tails / #Tails exists. @gajim / #Gajim exists. @monocles / #monoclesChat exists. @delta / #deltaChat exists. @thunderbird / #Thunderbird exists. @cryptoparty@mastodon.earth / @cryptoparty@chaos.social / #CryptoParties exist.
#Documentation in writing and videos exist.

What a great morning on #fdroid for #XMPP users:

1. #Conversations
A beta version of 2.15 arrived at F-Droid. It looks great and now uses Material 3 theme. Be aware: To install this version you need to explicitly select it in F-Droid.

2. #monocleschat
A new minor version has been released which brings GIF import, compatible stickers and other improvements.

3. #Snikket
A new version has been released bringing fixes and improvements from Conversations to Snikket users.

🎉 Have a nice weekend 🎉

@evacide NO, YOU CANNOT USE @signalapp@mastodon.world WITHOUT A PHONE NUMBER!!! *

They still require a phone number as they still do restrict the functionality of their App based off the phone number given!

Also we've all seen that #centralized, #SingleVendor & #SingleProvider solutions are inherently bad - so why should anyone use #Signal over #XMPP+#OMEMO or XMPP+#PGP/MIME ???

#Signal, like every provider in the #USA, is subject to #CloudAct ** and will obviously hand over the #metadata they collected without legitimate interest if told to do so. ***

After all, clients like @monocles ' #monoclesChat **** make XMPP w/ OMEMO and PGP/MIME extremely user-friendly...

Im many juristictions, you cannot legally obtain an anonymous prepaid SIM legally! *****

👇 https://signal.org/blog/phone-number-privacy-usernames/ #signal #messenger #telefonnummer #benutzername #datenschutz #privatsphare

@monocles released a massively improved version of the #android #xmpp app #monocleschat (#fdroid ).

The input line has been redesigned. Emojis are easier to handle now. It should look more familiar to users of other messengers.
You can set a background for the chatview.
Reactions can be send more easily (message selection).
The usage of the HW AEC has been disabled for the #Fairphone4 leading to a better videocall experience for #FP4 owners.
Thank you @monocles for this release.
