Really interesting read from #ManvirSingh gathering evidence that #ayahuasca is not as old or #Indigenous as it is made out to be. The tales tourists want to hear...
'Brabec de Mori argues that ayahuasca diffused through the Peruvian Amazon in the past 300 years. It is likely older among Tukanoan peoples further north, who, he suspects, transmitted the practice to populations missionised early in the lowlands. Yet in the regions most frequented by tourists, it seems to be a relative novelty. Brabec de Mori isn’t the first to make the argument – the anthropologist Peter Gow proposed something similar in 1994 – but he, more than anyone else, has found the anthropological data to support it.'
We definitely believe Peter Gow (who saw the equivalency of menstrual girls to shamans. Ayahuasca use tends to push women out)

Wilson assembles a worthy-enough fantasy in a terrific setting: ancient Sumer. Even so, the liberties she takes with the original myths undermine their complexity and cater to contemporary markets.

Well, at least it's not Fish(or Snake) Oil:
Myth: WD-40 Multi-Use Product contains fish oil.
Fact: “Consumers have told us over the years that they have caught some of the biggest fish ever after protecting their fishhooks and lures with WD-40 Multi-Use Product. We believe this legend came from folks assuming that the product must contain fish oil, since it appears to attract fish. Sorry, Charlie®, it just ain’t so.”
I’m excited to announce my drawing Eight Blessings on the Wind was chosen to be a part of the Birds in Myth exhibit at the Birds of Vermont Museum! The exhibit runs from May 1st to October 31st.
I wrote a thing. I hope you enjoy it!
From #Myth to Machine: When Stories Shaped Our Journey to the Stars
Humans have always looked up at the night sky—not just to navigate or measure, but to imagine. From ancient myths to Galileo’s telescope, from Jules Verne’s moon voyages to the visionary worlds of sci-fi writers, our stories about space have profoundly shaped our path into the cosmos.
Today, these once-fantastic narratives have become real infrastructure, influencing our #politics, #economy, technology, and #society in profound ways.
In my latest Society & Technology Newsletter, I explore how the imaginative power of storytelling has driven humanity’s journey into space—and what happens now that we’re actually there.
I’d love for you to read it, share your thoughts, and join this fascinating reflection.

The Japan Tariff Myth That Just Won’t Die
Why are Japanese streets empty of US cars? It’s no mystery — they're not good enough.
"I dreamt of the dragon"
"I have awakened him. Cannot you see, all around you, the dragon's breath?"
This evening's viewing: revisiting one of my all-time favourites, Boorman's Excalibur, which succeeds where other Arthur fulms fail, because it embraces the myth.
Skadi would win her bargain with the gods if she was not made to laugh, so they desperately sent their jester: Loki tied his bits and beard to a goat and kicked the goat, who pulled and pulled. Skadi at last smiled: her blood feud was over. #FairytaleTuesday #Norse #Myth #Folklore

Lovely visit from Rosie Hewlett, and the sun came out to illuminate our funky cold Medea painted window too!
The paperback edition of Medea is out now from Penguin, sgned copies available!
TIL: That Joseph Campbell is trash, universal myths aren't going to save us but maybe folklore can.
What's your favorite folk lore or public domain story that talks shit about rich people and/or monarchs?

"Yesterday’s #WhiteHouse stunt had all the hallmarks of Trump #corruption, but there was something else, too—an air of desperation. It was a tacit admission that the #protests are working and that #Musk and #Trump are rattled...
These moments make clear that this time, Musk has wagered the only thing he can’t easily buy back—the very #myth he created for himself."

Utter BS.
Apart from the fact that it doesn't work for 5 and above there is absolutely NO evidence for this #myth .
In many scripts 1,2,3 & 4 show evidence of their historic representation as the appropriate number of single strokes, but beyond that the concept makes no sense on any level.
You can tell by the bloke's stupid smug grin that he knows he's just winding up another bunch of dumb tourists.
