In a crack in the oak beam of a lock gate, bees 🐝 built a hive.

[Note that when lock gates open and close, they often thump against the stone lock chamber.]

Thump! Out come the bees! 🐝

🐝 And there I was, standing on the stern, surrounded by 🐝 bees, trying to convince myself it's OK, it's just 🐝bees looking around.

Closed the gate gently, emptied the lock, opened the gate at the lower end, and got the boat clear! 🐝

Who eats this #oak:

edit: I'm 98% sure that it's a sawfly of the genus Caliroa annulipes

1. because I saw the adults on Solomon's seal = typical. 2. Because they are indeed like mini-slugs eating only the inbetween of leaf veins. 3. The feeding marks are identical. 4. The combination of solomon's seal and oaks is typical in our naturepark.

This ancient oak shows why these remarkable trees are special. There are two trunks now so this is probably regrowth. Great chunks of bark are absent. It is riddled with insect holes of multiple sizes. Somehow a water supply pipe has become absorbed into it. It is as vigorous as ever.

Wee surprise while out gardening earlier. Was clearing some weeds from our raised beds before planting, when I realised I had acquired a pedunculate oak seedling.

While it would be lovely to have an #oak in the garden, I really don't want a #tree that can grow to 40m tall with a 10m girth that close to my house. So I popped it in a little pot, for now.

Thinking I might pot it on for a few years then find a spot in some woodland up the river to plant it out when it's established.

My little baby oak tree is about to burst into leaf. Squirrels bury acorns on my allotment and a few years ago I decided to pot one up. It stayed in the same pot for a long time and didn’t grow much then last year I repotted it and it absolutely shot up. Can’t wait to see what it does this year. #trees #oak #gardening

Solitaire

This was captured in February during the middle of winter.
Camped in Yosemite Valley a snow storm moved through the valley dumping about 8 inches of snow.
As I made my way through the village in the morning I saw this fabulous snow covered oak tree and decided it would make a good subject for a photo. It's not really solitaire but it did stand out from al the other trees around.

Three years ago, we found a tiny apricot tree sprouted from a kernel in the compost heap.
Planted it and cared for it. it now has its first fruit, about five little apricots!

This year's count of new oak trees from acorns hidden by squirrels is 12. Will be potted and given away next year when they can survive on their own.

Grape vine cutting has roots & leaves. By one, get many free, 😃.

First lavender is in full bloom. Lots of bees enjoying it. Pic later.
