Open source, open standards, and peer production models do not inherently challenge the rent-seeking behavior of information conglomerates, but can instead facilitate it."</p><p>👏 </p><p>This is exactly why with <span class="h-card"><a href="https://hcommons.social/@copim" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>copim</span></a></span>, we believe that true <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/openaccess" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>openaccess</span></a> is contingent on community-led open infrastructures, such as <span class="h-card"><a href="https://mastodon.social/@openbookcollect" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>openbookcollect</span></a></span> and <span class="h-card"><a href="https://hcommons.social/@Thoth_metadata" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>Thoth_metadata</span></a></span> </p><p><a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/openinfra" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>openinfra</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/OAbooks" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OAbooks</span></a> </p><p>Highly recommended reading! 👇 </p><p><a href="https://jon-e.net/surveillance-graphs/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">jon-e.net/surveillance-graphs/</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p>
Toby Steiner<p>And the wheels of the conglomeratisation machine keep turning ... </p><p>Following the recent (2022) acquisition of Ubiquity, </p><p>DeGruyter and Brill now "have joined forces to form De Gruyter Brill" ...</p><p>Purportedly, this "also allows the publisher to accelerate the transition to open access and fund technology investments for the benefit of the scholarly community".</p><p>Read: their shareholder's profits. 😑</p><p>Yet another step towards the corporate enclosure of publishing </p><p>... and another reason why our work to establish alternative <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/communityled" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>communityled</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/nonprofit" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>nonprofit</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/openinfra" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>openinfra</span></a> initiatives such as <span class="h-card"><a href="https://hcommons.social/@copim" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>copim</span></a></span>'s <span class="h-card"><a href="https://mastodon.social/@openbookcollect" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>openbookcollect</span></a></span> and <span class="h-card"><a href="https://hcommons.social/@Thoth_metadata" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>Thoth_metadata</span></a></span> <br>is so important! </p><p><a href="https://www.degruyter.com/publishing/about-us/press/press-releases/de-gruyter-brill-begins-here" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">degruyter.com/publishing/about</span><span class="invisible">-us/press/press-releases/de-gruyter-brill-begins-here</span></a></p>
Thoth Open Metadata<p>🎉 We're really excited to announce our partnership with <span class="h-card"><a href="https://bird.makeup/users/oapenbooks" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>oapenbooks</span></a></span> </p><p>With the recent agreement, Thoth becomes an OAPEN intermediary facilitating direct submission of OA books and corresponding metadata to OAPEN. This is done on behalf of Thoth’s key stakeholder group of small and scholar-led publishers that are using Thoth for easy management and dissemination of their content and metadata. Those books submitted through Thoth will also be listed on the Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB).</p><p>Publishers using Thoth to submit their OA books to OAPEN will benefit from a full waiver of operational submission fees, while the submission process will be handled directly through Thoth.</p><p><a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/OAbooks" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OAbooks</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/MetadataMatters" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MetadataMatters</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/metadata" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>metadata</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/openinfra" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>openinfra</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/OpenData" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OpenData</span></a> </p><p>More on this exciting development here 👇🏽</p><p><a href="https://oapen.org/article/8778704-oapen-and-thoth-open-metadata-sign-partnership-agreement" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">oapen.org/article/8778704-oape</span><span class="invisible">n-and-thoth-open-metadata-sign-partnership-agreement</span></a></p>
Thoth Open Metadata<p>In light of the newest lawsuit filed by OCLC, it's important to remember that there is no reason other than commercial interests to lock down book metadata (or any other kind of metadata, for that matter) ... </p><p>As Thoth director <span class="h-card"><a href="https://hcommons.social/@vangervenoei" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>vangervenoei</span></a></span> writes in one of our earlier blog posts, </p><p>"proposals to release metadata in the public domain have [...] encountered resistance from commercial vendors who benefit from a closed metadata ecosystem. </p><p>[...] many stakeholders in the scholarly communications chain make significant investments into creating metadata records, and it is perhaps a feature of the current closed and compartmentalized book metadata ecosystem that much of these investments are actually unnecessary double work."</p><p>This is why we advocate for open, public domain metadata, and all metadata created via Thoth is released under CC0 by default.</p><p><a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/MetadataMatters" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MetadataMatters</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/OAbooks" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OAbooks</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/remix" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>remix</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/openinfra" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>openinfra</span></a> <a href="https://hcommons.social/tags/LoveData24" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LoveData24</span></a></p><p>van Gerven Oei, V.
