Heads up #PermaComputing Berlin friends. Our next Meet-Up is approaching:

# permacomputing & postmarketOS #

13. July 2025 at 19:00
@offline
Lichtenrader Str. 49

Artist and Designer Chaline Bang ( @chalinebang ) will talk about her personal adventures and collective experiments in permacomputing. She is a member of the Rotterdam-based research group _permacomputing evenings_ and will share how they learned to build servers out of obsolete smartphones using postmarketOS. The group conducted experiments into practical techniques and aesthetic approaches as well as organizing public events with outside researchers.

hi #permacomputers, #hackers, #bricoleurs

Starting to tinker with old/disused smartphones to self-host. However, upon buying a couple second-hand phones, I'm often faced with Google's FRP protection: you can only use the phone by connecting to the previous owner's google account. Factory reset doesn't solve this.
Do you have any trustworthy resources on bypassing this? terminal tools? forums?
Seems essentials to increase phone's lifespan.

thankssss

End of 10

If you know someone, friend, family, colleague, etc, stuck on windows 10, and you are nearby Amsterdam, De Versterking can help you switch to Linux at their anarchist repair café!

Tuesday, 24 June, 2025 - 18:00

"Support for Windows 10 is ending in October, and many older computers cannot upgrade to Windows 11. Installing Linux on your old computer can prolong its lifespan and help reduce e-waste. Bring your computer and we'll help you with the installation process."

Upcoming #permacomputing meeting (edition 3) in #vienna!

- Tuesday, July 15th 19:00
- This time we'll meet outside at Auer-Welsbach-Park (close by Schönbrunn)
- "Batteries included!" (scnr) because ... our topic will be batteries: Building open source batteries, batteries and the energy transition, lithium mining, ethical ramifications, and so on.

Anyone interested in the topic of permacomputing.net/ is very welcome, whether you're just curious or already a seasoned permacomputer, we're glad to have you! :)

Exact meeting spot in the park is still tbd, but our batterista of the evening @Ansimorph will be able to supply it at some point between now and the meeting itself, so keep an eye out for that (I'll relay it too then).

🎇 Help save Philly's local solarpunk bookstore! Iffy Books, which has offered everything from books on permaculture to first aid workshops to open hours for soldering assistance, needs your help. Please share this letter widely!

I've been grateful for the opportunity this space offered me to rekindle my relationship with digital art for merch and run solar art and queer zine workshops. Iffy Books is irreplaceable in our community. To keep offering programs and resources that foster climate activism, right to repair, and skill sharing in Philly, we need to take action now.

A letter from Steve at Iffy Books
June 13, 2025

In 2021 we were pushing anti-blockchain arguments.

In 2022 we were pushing solar-powered music and encrypted mesh chat.

We’ve been against LLMs since before ChatGPT came along, and we hope we’re around to dance on its grave.

Iffy Books is the kind of place that feels like it shouldn’t exist in the center of a big city like Philly. How have we kept it going for so long?

• With lots of help from a community of volunteers, donors, and book-buying folks.

• By skating on very thin ice money-wise.
post.lurk.orgIffy Books (@iffybooks@post.lurk.org)Attached: 4 images This is tough to talk about, but we'll need some help to keep Iffy Books going. Here's a letter we've been circulating that explains the situation: https://iffybooks.net/a-letter-from-steve-at-iffy-books-june-13-2025/

Oddly... having second thoughts about going to #VCFSW.

I don't know if it's a #2025Anxiety thing or just general ennui, but all I can muster is a half-hearted, "maybe?"

You know what would be even better than a retro tech convention? A FOSS / #PermaCulture tech convention. THAT would be trippy.

Like, I love retro tech. I lived through that era. Sitting in front of the machines that meant so much to me growing up is a wonderful feeling.

But I guess nostalgia alone doesn't really soothe the dystopia-anguished heart. Not for long.

I miss going to #LinuxUserGroups. There was one in OKC in the 2000s, and it was always a lot of fun.

Instead of looking backwards at retro tech (which will always be awesome, just to be clear), just imagine a #FOSS/#PermaComputing symposium/convention of awesome nerds like @jacqueline, @neauoire, @mntmn, #BunnieHuang, and maybe some folks from @frameworkcomputer

That would be AWESOME!

What if architecture prioritized repair, care, and maintenance; cut ties with fossil fuels; and did the necessary work to truly decarbonize, and decolonize the building industry? What would that look like?
For some architects, degrowth has meant calling for a “global moratorium” on new construction, an idea that the most ethical thing an architect can do in 2025 is simply to stop building new buildings, instead thinking more strategically about how to make best use of the stock we have around us. In other circles, it’s meant cutting ties with the fossil fuel industry; building buildings with timber instead of concrete; and sourcing construction materials from local or regional manufacturers rather than global supply chains.
engineers of computer infrastructure should really take note of the climate discourse happening in architecture.

Hey everyone,

the permacomputing principles have received an important update!

permacomputing.net/principles/ :permacomputing:

Next to our attempt to articulate things a bit better, we're now testing a new structure to give examples of how each principle could be translated into more concrete steps regardless of levels of technical skills and literacy.

⚠️ It's still a 🚧 big work-in-progress 🚧 , and for sure not the last iteration. :oh_no_bubble:

This new text benefited from input, feedback and the writing/editing of: annaa @cmos4040 @decentral1se @jveenk @kattrali @latentspace @l03s @leoscarin @michal @msavoritias @manetta @neajul @pixouls @praxeology @sandu @sister0 @viznut and myself.

Big Thanks to @mordremoth for last minute sharp remarks and to everyone shaping, hacking, breaking, growing and fermenting ideas and practices around this topic!

If you're interested to join this happy mess, check permacomputing.net/Community/ to get started.
