Nonya Bidniss :CIAverified:
I just put #PlexAmp on my phone and tried one of it's "DJs" and it's really good. I love how it fades into the next track. I'm curious how it's going to work when I'm not on my network. When I try to use Plex at the gym to watch a show while on the treadmill, it really doesn't work due to molasses downloads. That's even though I seem to be getting a good 5G signal there. 🤷

Brad Romance
TLDR: Consider turning off “Loudness Leveling” if you use #PlexAmp.

—

Spent a chunk of time last night trying to figure out why music didn’t sound so good in PlexAmp compared to other apps. I was actually happy enough with the audio quality until I compared a track directly with Apple Music and realised there was a difference.

I got some new headphones recently and was faffing with them, trying to see if they support Dolby Atmos (they do, but not in Apple Music for some reason). In the process of doing that I found that compared to Apple Music, the same track in PlexAmp was somehow flatter, almost muffled. The file being played is a high quality one, it should be pretty much identical if it’s not playing Atmos (which it wasn’t) so this was confusing.

I was disappointed. I’ve pretty much stopped using Apple Music altogether but I want the best quality I can get. So I did some digging to find out what’s going on.

I logged into the Plex web app on my phone and played the same song… it was as good as when I played it on Apple Music. That told me the problem wasn’t the file at all, it MUST be PlexAmp.

Going through the settings, I disabled the EQ, no change. Then I spotted the “Loudness Leveling” settings under the Playback menu. In there, two things were turned on: Loudness Leveling and Limiter. Turning off Loudness Leveling disabled Limiter too.

There was no change immediately, but I quit PlexAmp and relaunched it and… the music sounded as good as Apple Music. 🥳

I’m sure Loudness Leveling has its uses but for me, I didn’t like what it was doing. I’m much happier with it disabled.

Stewart Tolhurst
Plex types - is it worth springing for a lifetime PlexPass before the price goes up? Basically it gives me the same functions as iTunes Match (albeit in in a separate app from the streaming service, but also covers offline video), but for a one off cost rather than an annual sub. The extra features in PlexAmp seem useful, if not essential (seems like it is aiming for feature parity with the big streaming players). £100 one off payment seems pretty good value to me… #Plex #PlexAmp

Rick Williams
I’ve been using #plex for over a decade. For some reason I’ve slept on #plexamp because I through streaming was all I needed. After hearing several people talk favorably about it I decided to throw my old collection in it. What a fantastic app! I feel like I’ve rediscovered a ton of music I love. The DJs and Stations are really fun and well done. It’s just a joy to use. Check it out if you have an old music library lying around.

SQLAllFather
I left Spotify in 2021 and started listening to my own music collection. I already had the MP3s and/or the CDs from which to rip them, so I hosted them on my Plex server and started listening to them using the excellent Plexamp mobile client.

One thing I missed from Spotify was the "wrapped" listening summary... but I'd always believed I could improve on what Spotify delivered. This winter break I spent some time implementing a solution in Microsoft Fabric. I used data from my Plex server's SQLite database for recent years, and from the JSON files that Spotify will send you if you make a GDPR data request for older years. I standardized enriched both data sets with the open source MusicBrainz database, and then visualized some Spotify-inspired vanity metrics in Power BI.

1/

#Notify #Plex #Plexamp #YearInReview #Music #Metal #MicrosoftFabric #PowerBI

And usually these versions are terrible. Autograph’s Turn Up The Radio is one of the worst examples I have heard. Worse? They replace the songs on the original albums sometimes!

DaveKaz
Tired of #Plex mangling my audio files metadata so I’m trying #Roon. Brad Romance
Trying out one of the mood playlists #PlexAmp creates after it’s analysed your music. I went for the “Bright” one for some music while I’m sorting out my dinner. It’s interesting, cos it includes tracks I wouldn’t really listen to mixed in with my favourites.

Brad Romance
One feature #PlexAmp doesn’t seem to have that I miss from the old iTunes days is “start/finish time”. Some songs have intros or outros I don’t like, and I used to set a start/finish time to skip those sections.

In Apple Music, I manually edited and uploaded the edited version. I guess I’ll have to do the same in PlexAmp.

Honestly, that top row is worth whatever temporary hassle I may experience setting up a music library in #Plex over the next while. I have no idea why Apple doesn’t let you add your favourite stuff somewhere obvious for quick access.

This is a “smart collection”; any album I rate as 5 starts will automatically appear there.

I also have some smart playlists, with rules like “top rated stuff I added in the last month” and “top rated stuff I haven’t played in the last month”. This was possible via the Apple Music desktop app, but it’s nice to be able to set them up on the fly in #PlexAmp.

Hmm I just noticed that if I switch back to single star ratings, stuff I’ve rated as one or two stars is treated as if I’ve disliked it (star with a line through it). I think that will fuck with my suggestions down the line. Might have to switch all my 1 stars to 3 stars. #PlexAmp #Plex
